According to Mr. Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman RP- Sanjiv Goenka Group, Co-owner, Atlético de Kolkata, “I welcome José Molina into our Atlético de Kolkata family. Molina’s experience with leading clubs of Spain and other parts of the world makes him an ideal candidate to take our on field performance few notches higher in his forthcoming assignment. He will be instrumental in building the team’s strategy and help us select some good prospective footballers for the upcoming season. We wish him all the success and I am definitely sure that he will showcase the finest quality of football under his able guidance that has become synonymous to Atlético de Kolkata.“ - Xtra Time
Well he certainly is not at a level of Habas in terms of experience. But Molina is a young manager and has coached in La Liga and also has experience of coaching in Asia.
ATK seems like made a conscious choice of not going for a big money manager. Habas was let go because of that. Molina would any day be a A-League level coach. And honestly we are at AFC Cup level. He won every tournament in Hong Kong last season and took Kitchee to AFC Cup QF before stepping down. We should be signing these type of coaches ideally, as it is sustainable.
A Zico or Roberto Carlos doesn't add any value here, when we have a flawed system altogether. Personally though I would have loved Cesar Farias at ATK,
Jose Molina is a former Spanish national team and Atletico Madrid goal keeper, with whom he won the league and the Copa de Rey. As per coaching experience is concerned , he has mostly coached in Spanish 3rd tier Villareal's and Getafe's reserve teams since 2009..managed the senior team in 2011 in La Liga before he got sacked. Last year he managed Hong Kong;s kitchee, winning a treble with them , the league , FA cup and the league cup.
Honestly, ATK's former coach wasnt a big name either. Only difference would be in experience. Jose is only 45 years old, atleast he is actively involved in regular coaching instead of those inexperienced player-coach things that has become a norm in ISL.
Level going down due to signing an AFC Cup level coach? Nah. Adelaide United signed Gombau from Kitchee as well and he was their best coach in a long time!
