The above link is of new cricket stadium coming up in Lucknow. And Gujarat Cricket Association is planning to construct world's biggest cricket stadium with a capacity of 110000 in Ahmedabad.
Totally wrong to blame cricket for our football mess. We are building more cricket stadiums because we are good at cricket. Football should coexist with other games rather than competitions with it. Football infrastructure will improve if our improves. Look at hockey, badminton
In cricket, earlier only Bombay, Calcutta, Madras were established Test Match Centers while other cities/states were mostly managing by stadiums leased from Government ownership.
1) Now number of associations of Cricket have increased. Every association wants to have their own modern stadium. 2) Rotation policy means that now almost all associations are getting chance to host International matches. T20 has increased the number of cricket ties. 3) It is financially very lucrative to build a stadium. Profit in giving huge contracts is there. They get to keep profits instead of leasing stadiums from government. 4) Association owned stadiums are cricket ready year round. Otherwise it was a task getting stadiums ready as they were used for all reasons - Army Jawan recruitment rally to Baba Ramdev Yoga shivir.
The day our AIFF will also start thinking about Football like BCCI or Hockey India, we will also have stadiums. Different state associations have to be more proactive.
Mohali Stadium (Punjab) started the trend of profit making from Association owned stadium in early 1990s. Club house with various facilities, Bar plus a venue for big fat Punjabi weddings. http://www.cricketpunjab.in/facilities.html
