I-League continues to be the breeding ground for exciting talents
Every edition of the I-League has thrown up talented players. In the previous season, Mohun Bagan's Sourav Das rose to the occassion and now, after a turbulent start in his new club Mumbai City FC, is gradually finding his feet under Jorge Costa. Similarly, Chennaiyin's Edwin Vanspaul has also established himself as an undisputed starter under Owen Coyle, carrying forward his impressive performances from the previous season that helped his former club Chennai City FC become I-League champions.
This season is no exception. As most of the clubs in I-League operate within shoestring budgets, the officials and scouts are always on the lookout for young players who will make the most of the opportunity handed to them.
In fact, most ISL clubs generally recruit players who have performed in the I-League.
Tiddim Road Atheltic Union's (TRAU) Lashiram Premjit Singh is one of them. At a tender age of 18, the Manipuri lad has been a livewire in the wings for the I-League debutantes. He has the pace to burn which often gives the defenders a run for their money. Against Aizawl, he was at the right place at the right time to score the equaliser for his side. He gave Abhishek Ambekar a tough time when East Bengal took on TRAU in Kalyani. If the winger improves his ball control and sharpens his crossing skills, he can turn out to be a fine weapon in the armoury for any side.
Ayush Adhikari of Indian Arrows is another player who has shown signs of potential. He ticks all the right boxes for an attacking midfielder as he has vision and composure to orchestrate proceedings from an advanced position in the pitch. He was the linchpin when the blue cavalry defeated East Bengal and his performances show no sign of dipping irrespective of the opponent. His partnership with Vikram Pratap, another prodigy to look up to, is flourishing with every passing match and the rejoining of Rohit Danu will only make the attack fiercer. Interestingly he has also been the top scorer for Delhi when he represented them in Santosh Trophy.
If we head South, then Gokulam Kerala's Naocha Singh has also put in a string of impressive performances at left-back. The Manipuri player got scant opportunities in the previous season at NEROCA, but has taken large strides of improvement under Santiago Varela. He is a bundle of energy who paces up and down the flank boasting of an incredible work rate. His anticipation while defending in one-on-one situations reflects his maturity and understanding of the game. It is no surprise that the Spanish coach has handed him nine starts and has already clocked 728 minutes in this season's I-League.
But the two most promising talents who have taken the I-League by storm hail from league leaders Mohun Bagan in SK Sahil and Subha Ghosh. Both the players are products of the Mohun Bagan academy and have been promoted to the senior team since Kibu Vicuna took over this season.
Sahil has been one of the first names on the team sheet since the Calcutta Football League (CFL) and the young defensive midfielder has hardly put a foot wrong in I-League as well. Playing alongside Fran Gonzalez has been a boon for him as the experienced Spaniard guides him and helps him with his composure. In the derby against East Bengal, Sahil did not have a smooth start to the match and lost possession quite a few times in the opening quarter. Gonzalez was constantly interacting with him and as the match progressed, the teenager grew into the game. He times his tackles to perfection and the fact that he has been cautioned only once is a testimony to the aforementioned claim.
On the other hand, Subha Ghosh has been a super-sub for Mohun Bagan. The 19-year old striker has got just over 200 minutes on the pitch but has scored three goals. His 88th-minute strike against Punjab FC earned Bagan a valuable point and more importantly stole two points from the hosts who are hot on the heels of the Kolkata giants. Against Churchill Brothers he took the pitch for just 20 minutes and in that short period, he created three chances.
Ghosh has the panache of a typical number nine coupled with the vision to find the right pass. Albeit, he has to improve his movements inside the box. He also needs to work on his physique as he is going to go up against defenders who are physically superior to him. But if the forward keeps his head down and continues to tread on the same path, then he has in him what it takes to succeed on more important stages.
