Rudra this is specially for you:

FIH has made qualifying for world cup finals a bit more difficult this time onwards by having two world league groups called semis where there are 8 nations each which can be any of the top nations..of these 2 semis, top 3 qualify for world cup....before this there is a another round of world league which India won amongst weaker teams to qualify for semis...similarly other smaller groups were there
remaining teams qualify by winning continental championships which put pressure on unqualified big teams since only 1 spot from there

Now if teams qualify from world league but then win continental also, the second best from continental or world league based on certain criteria qualify..basically we had set a target to qualify from semis where we finished 6th..

Rabobank Hockey World Cup – Men’s Qualifiers

* Netherlands finished third in the Hockey World
League Semi-Final event in Rotterdam. As they are already pre-qualified
as the host, this means that the highest ranked fourth place finisher
from both Semi-Final events earns direct qualification to the Rabobank
Hockey World Cup. This place goes to New Zealand, who were fourth in
Rotterdam and currently sit fifth in the FIH World Rankings.

Too be honest we are a bit lucky due to other results but with a very weak and inexperienced team that we brought to Asia cup this is nothing less than a spectacular achievement..I wud give credit to Oltmans for this first
Watched the complete match on TV. Sort of disappointed with the performance of the Indian team. Propbaly got relaxed as we qualified for World Cup. Malaysia had created many bright chances but our defense, Sreejesh and Malaysia's bad luck did them in.
