K. Srikanth defeated the legendary Lin Dan for the second time in his career to set up an all-Indian quarterfinal against Sameer Verma at the Denmark Open here.
World No. 6 Srikanth bounced back to beat the World No. 14 from China 18-21, 21-17, 21-16 in the second round clash on Thursday.
Lin Dan is not the player he used to be but is still a force to reckon with. It was a fifth meeting between Srikanth and Lin Dan and the Chinese great won the last time they played, in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Srikanth had famously scored his maiden win over Lin Dan to win the 2014 China Open.
Saina Nehwal defeated World No.2 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan for the first time in four years to enter the women’s singles quarterfinals.
Later in the day, Sameer Verma held his nerve to beat Asian Games champion Jonathan Christie.
The ninth-ranked Indian let go of three match points in the deciding game before pulling off a 23-21, 6-21, 22-20 victory.
Saina won her second-round match convincingly. The Olympic bronze-medallist, who has dropped to 27 in the latest world rankings, registering a 21-15, 21-17 win over second-seeded Yamaguchi.
The 28-year-old Indian will now take on World No. 3 and another Japanese, Nozomi Okuhara, in the quarterfinals.
Saina Nehwal defeated Gregoria Mariska 21-11, 21-12 in the women's singles semi-final in a match that lasted for 30 minutes to enter the finals. Saina won the first game in 13 minutes while she took 17 minutes to close the second game. She will face top-seeded Tai Tzu Ying in the summit clash on Sunday.
Earlier, defending champion Kidambi Srikanth was knocked out of the Denmark Open 2018 after losing 16-21, 12-21 in 44 minutes to world no 1 Kento Momota in 44 minutes.
