Sradhanjali Samantray Appointed Assistant Coach Of U-17 Indian Women’s Football Team
Odisha’s Sradhanjali Samantray was appointed as the Assistant Coach of U-17 Indian women’s football team on Thursday.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) appointed Samantray, the former Indian women’s football team captain to coach of U-17 Indian women’s football team which will meet in New Delhi for a training camp at SAI from July 1 to 15, 2018 to kick-off their preparations for the upcoming BRICS Games (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
The BRICS Games will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa in December 2018.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Behera, Secretary of Football Association of Odisha (FAO) congratulated Samantray on her appointment.
Apart from playing for Odisha and Indian and leading the teams, Sradhanjali was the coach of the Rising Club that won the title in the 2nd Indian Women’s League, held at Shillong from March 27 to April 14, 2018.
She was appointed Assistant coach of the Indian team for the AFC Under-14 Girls Regional Championship held at Dushanbe, Tajikistan in 2016.
Performed as Assistant coach of the National U-14 girls’ football team for U-14 Girls Regional Football Championship held at Kathmandu in 2015.
The Odia girl became an AFC ‘B’ license coach after successfully completing the course, which was held in West Bengal in 2014.
She was the head coach of the state senior women football team that won the silver medal in 35th National Games, held in Kerala in 2015.
Sradhanjali, who started playing football from 1992, was the coach of the Odisha team that finished runners-up in the 20th Senior Women Football Games held in Assam in 2014.
She was the first player from Odisha to lead Indian women’s football team.
For her outstanding career as player and captain, Sradhanjali was conferred with the Biju Patnaik Sportsperson of the year in 2006 by Odisha government. Besides, she was given the Ekalabya Award in 2005.
The press Club of Odisha also honoured her with the Sports Woman of the Year Award and cheque of Rs 25,000 in 2013.
Indian Women fall to defeat against Russia in BRICS U-17 tournament
This is the team's second straight defeat in the tournament with the first coming against hosts South Africa.
The Indian U-17 Women’s National Team lost 1-3 to Russia in the BRICS U-17 Football Tournament on July 19, 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Coming on the back of a 1-5 loss against the hosts South Africa, the Indian eves took an early lead through Soumya Guguloth in the 6th minute but Russia came back strong and ran out eventual winners scoring three goals in the remaining time.
After Soumya had put India ahead in the 6th minute as she slotted home from a cross, the opponents did little wait and in the 9th minute equalized proceedings.
Samiksha’s effort in the 17th minute earned a decent save from the opposition goalkeeper but Russia doubled their lead in the 28th minute as the scoreline read 1-2. The opponents led at half-time.
Changing over, the Indian eves showed vigour in attacking but the momentum was cut short once again when Russia found the net in the 62nd minute to double their lead as the scoreline read 1-3.
In the 77th minute, Samiksha rattled the woodwork after her fierce free-kick left the opposition custodian bewildered. The Indian eves pressed to minimize their deficit but could only hit the woodwork in the dying embers of the match. The full-time scoreline read 1-3 in Russia’s favour.
The Indian U-17 Women’s National Team faces Brazil next on July 21, 2018.
