In early December 2014, when news first broke out that FC Goa striker Romeo Fernandes found favour with Clube Atletico Paranaense, a top division club in Brazil, there was euphoria all around the state. Today, the 22-year-old Goan star who bloomed under the guidance of Dempo's Australian coach Arthur Papas before Brazilian legend Zico honed his skills and made him a star at FC Goa in the inaugural Indian Super League is 48-hours away from taking that big step, as the January 31 international transfer window closes. Sources confirmed that Dempo could be releasing Romeo after receiving assurances that the talented Goan would get enough playing exposure to not just gain international experience but take his game and fitness to the next level, putting him on par with international players. It is learnt that the delay in deciding on Romeo's move to Brazil was more due to Dempo's concern that the player's services be utilised rather than just using him as a vehicle to gain commercial mileage in marketing the club as a brand in India. In all likelihood, Romeo should be Brazil bound by the first week of February. Romeo was one of the most impressive Indian players on view for FC Goa in the recently concluded ISL where he won the heart of FC Goa coach Zico who recommended his name to the Brazilian club. Incidentally, five of the club's reserve players played in the Indian Super League -- Gustavo Dos Santos (Delhi Dynamos), Bruno Pelissari (Chennaiyin FC), Pedro Gusmao, Erwin Spitzner and Guilherme Batata. Romeo, who was first spotted by former coach Armando Colaco and drafted into the I-League, has grown into a versatile player and has already represented India in the under-22 AFC Asian Cup. He scored two goals in two appearances when playing for the India under-23. "What we have seen of Romeo is the result of his sincere practice and efforts. It is the fruit of his hard work. I keep on guiding him and giving him confidence so that he can perform as per his capabilities," Zico once said of the Goan during the ISL. Romeo picked up three man-of-the-match awards during the ISL. Paranaense a tie-up with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to help develop Indian football and strengthen the Indian team ahead of the 2017 Fifa under-17 World Cup to be held in India.
