Chennai has been time and again overlooked for sports esp in football. Hope ISL proves once and for all that there is good appetite for sports to grow in the city.
Plus the stadium is just amazing, Good infrastructure compared to most stadiums currently being used for football.
@Ashlesh was more or less disappointed with him during the Durand Cup. The guy has recently played below a professional level in England so overall, based on that, he is a good enough guy to be a foreigner in the I-League but as a marquee? Not at all!
@gaffertape Next to Bangalore Football stadium, they got this Raheja point, Raheja Plaza. That is Stadium land? In the case of demolition of stadium, those people will have to go? Too many stakeholders is the problem and everybody wants their pie. Karnataka Government, Bangalore Municipality, Karnataka State Football Association, Raheja, Jindal Group. who will be the owner of new stadium? Karnataka State Football association or BFC?
The KSFA were granted a lease on the land from the Karnataka State Govt for use for footballing activities..
The stadium was built by the then BWSSB ( bangalore Water Supply and Sewage Board ), this organisation has been re-structured to become the BMC ( Bangalore Municipal Corporation ) later BBMP...
Anyways enough of the history ( there were also slum dwellers who were burned out of this land in a late night arson attack... ) ...that I'll save for another day...
Over the years with funds drying up , and massive land grabs happening in Bangalore... the corrupt gys at the helm of the KSFA & BDFA ( Bangalore District Football Association ) , along with the help of local politician and land mafia baron.. sold of chunks of the land surrounding the stadium....
Some of this was to the Raheja Plaza...some to the HomeStop complex....
They also built office spaces underneath the North Stands and rented these to businesses
They also allowed a Fashion College/institute to crop up under the West Stands , and also some other shady businesses which embers were profiting from..
The latest venture sees them allow JSW to redevelop the stadium..including the "Dhobi Ghat" behind the East stands which are under litigation...
JSW will build a world class stadium for the U-17 U-17 World Cup , and under these blanket , also build a Mall, Hotel , Convention Centre...etc etc....
The profits from this will be split 15% to KSFA and co and 85% to JSW....however JSW will have to bear the full costs of all the work..
The State Exchequer benefits, the local Politicians get their cut..and the KSFA/BDFA guys will have a steady supply of income for life...( to not use on footballing activities )
So to answer your question...the Karnataka Govt will still OWN the land...it will still fall under the Lease to the Football Associations...who have in turn SUB-contracted it to JSW
