India to play Nepal in 2018 World Cup qualifier India will face the Gorkhalis in the World Cup qualifiers, a team which has been previously coached by Constantine... Atanu Mitra 10-Feb-2015 13:30:53 India will kick-start their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification on March 12, 2015 when they face neighbours Nepal at Guwahati's Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium in the first of the two encounters. The first round of the World Cup qualifiers will be played in a home and away format with the second leg scheduled for 17th March, 2015. The possible opponents of the Sunil Chhteri-captained side was to be chosen from the 40th to 45th ranked nations in the continent, that is Nepal, Macau, Pakistan, Mongolia, Brunei and Bhutan. A draw in the AFC (Asian Footballl Confederation) headquarters on Tuesday morning finalized that India would take on one of its fiercest football rivals, who are now ranked 186th in the FIFA rankings, 15 places below India. The last match between the two sides was played in Siliguri back in 2013 and goals from Sunil and Clifford Miranda helped India notch up a convincing 2-0 win. The sixteen worst ranked teams of the continent participate in this first round of qualifying step with the eight victorious sides joining the best 32 teams to make it eight groups of five teams. This will also be the first test for Stephen Constantine, who has been re-appointed as the coach of the side after an inspiring spell with Rwanda national team. What will give teams more incentive this year is that the qualifiers for the World Cup double up as qualifiers for the 2019 edition of the AFC Asian Cup The India national team played only two official matches in 2014 and if they can win the fixture against Nepal, they are expected to play a number of matches on the FIFA dates, which can in turn improve the ranking of the nation. The Blue Tigers have not won a single World Cup qualifier since 18th February 2004, when a second half strike by Renedy Singh earned a 1-0 win over Singapore in Goa. m.goal.com/x/en-india/news/8785002
We need to have at least 2 goal advantage in the first leg ..Away goal in the first leg will be an aadded advatage for them when they play in kathmandu. I feel that it is always better to play the first leg as an away game.
