During the Derby match of the I League that took place on 9th December 2012, we assessed the seriousness of our player, Syed Rahim Nabi’s injury and the fact that violence had spread in the Stadium. We assumed that there would be a recurrence of 16th August 1980 so in order to prevent loss of lives of the spectators and football lovers, the four of us; namely, the General Secretary, Mr. Anjan Kumar Mitra, the Assistant General Secretary, Mr. Srinjoy Bose, the Hony. Finance Secretary, Mr. Debashis Dutta and myself took a decision to withdraw the Team. We felt and I reiterate that we still feel that saving lives is more important than playing a match.
Immediately, an Emergent Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Club was convened in this regard on 10th December at the Club premises, during which all the 21 members present unanimously supported our stand to withdraw the Team. None of the remaining 9 members of the Executive Committee, who were absent in that meeting, neither wrote or spoke to me or to the Hony. General Secretary that they did not agree with our decision. So it is beyond doubt that our decision was ratified whole heatedly by the Executive Committee of the Club. We have tried to explain to AIFF in this regard and we are grateful to AIFF for giving us another opportunity on 15th January 2013 at New Delhi. We are hopeful that we will not be denied justice.
Since last couple of weeks, some people are making comments against the Club Officials and launching mud slinging campaigns rather than trying to save the Club. They are making hay while the sun shines and trying to politicize the entire matter. Many more members and supporters have sent emails and rang me up mentioning that they are with the Club and that they stand by our united decision. The few of those who are trying to divide us are living in fool’s paradise.
I, as President of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, appeal to all Members and Supporters to remain united and with the Club in our moment of crisis and on 15 th January 2013 we should all ask AIFF to give us a favourable decision. That must be the motto and one-point agenda for all those of us who sincerely love and care for our beloved Club.
