Governor's Gold Cup back after a year's gap

    Sixteen teams including
    four second division I-League clubs
and two top squads from Nepal are
participating in the 33rd All India
    Governor’s Gold Cup football
tournament being organized by Sikkim Football Association (SFA)
here at Paljor Stadium. The premier
    regional level tournament would be
kicking off from October 30 and
    conclude on November 10.

The Governor’s Gold Cup, one of the few football tournaments organized uninterruptedly for the last 32 years,
could not be held last year due to the devastating earthquake of September 18 in Sikkim.

  • SFA president BK Roka, general secretary Menla Ethenpa, vice president Dr Sonam T Ethenpa, joint secretary Chung Chung Bhutia, treasurer Nanga Tshering Bhutia and joint secretary (publicity) Lherap Bhutia on October 17 briefed media about the upcoming showpiece football tournament of Sikkim. “This edition not only has exciting teams, mostly from second division I-League but we are also conducting a women’s football championship along with the Governor’s Gold Cup. We want to encourage our women footballers and the women’s football matches would be an added attraction”, said SFA general secretary Menla Ethenpa here at Football House.

Two teams from each of the four districts of Sikkim are participating in the All Sikkim Women’s Football Championship. The women football matches would be held prior to Governor’s Gold Cup being held on the same day.

  • The women’s tournament comes at a time when local girl Lako Phuti Bhutia has been selected for the U-19 Indian women’s team. The national squad is leaving for Malaysia today evening for Malaysia to play their AFC U-19 Women’s Championship 2013 qualifiers from October 20 to 24. Five teams from Kolkata participating in the tournament are Mohan Bagan SAIL, Techno Aryans, Bhawanipur FC, Calcutta Customs and Eastern Railways. Representing the Northeast are Ar-Hima and Langshing SC from Shillong and Dimapur XI from Nagaland. BSF Jalandhar, Dodsal FC from Mumbai and Pune FC (U-19) are also featuring along with two Nepalese clubs, Three Star and Manyang Masangdi. The Sikkimese challenge will consist of State level Independence Day football tournament winner Sikkim Sports Academy and S-League senior
division champions Sinolchu FC from Namchi. Local I-League club United Sikkim FC has also been invited to play in the tournament.

  • Mr. Ethenpa explained that Sinolchu FC was given a spot in Governor’s Gold Cup as the Namchi based club was the State league winners while the Sikkim Sports Academy had lifted this year’s State level Independence Day football tournament. Tickets for the Governor’s Gold Cup matches are fixed at Rs. 50 for the hill side gallery, Rs. 100 for the northern and southern stands (behind the goalposts), Rs. 200 for the western gallery and Rs. 300 for the VIP stand. The rates will remain same for the whole tournament, SFA said.

    Addressing the post-match press
conference, Dempo SC coach, Armando Colaco, lauded the
game of his squad and shared
that the club is not only going
home with 3 points but also fond
    memories of Sikkim despite the
challenging weather conditions and other difficulties. He also
    appreciated the game played by
    the home club.

  • “USFC players played a very good
    game and control over the
Dempo SC players but the experience of the Dempo SC took
over at the end,” he said. Mr
    Colaco further commented that
he really liked the game of some
    USFC players and will be
monitoring their game closely and exploring possibilities of
signing them on when the next
    transfer season arrives.
