@dreamer I didn't predict that before the start of the season. Aizawl, and Royal Wahingdoh before them, showed great flair and good football. I pegged Aizawl for midtable/lowertable honestly but in the ISL I am not sure they have the funds or infrastructure to compete against the other teams and if the foreigners is kept to at least 6 then I don't even think they could afford foreigners up to scratch and can see certain players leaving. Hell, they are already set to lose Jayesh Rane and Albino Gomes since they were only on loan, already 2 starters gone.
Also you know what I mean by the horrendous structure. How many of the I-League squads were assembled almost in the last minute? How many pre-seasons cut short or nonexistent from the beginning? Many players were away for the Indian Super League. Aizawl, meanwhile, probably had one of the better "pre-seasons" in which they played the Durand Cup and then the whole Mizoram Premier League and then afterwards were able to pick some of the better players from MPL to strengthen the squad. Many of their squad was retained and didn't even play ISL. Also the short nature of the I-League means that once a team, say Bengaluru FC, messes up, they are out. And there isn't much time to fix a squad and mount a challenge.
Credit to Aizawl for remaining consistent throughout the league and taking advantage of chances other teams didn't but I would be very, very interested to see how they would have done had the I-League been ran the way it was say, back in 2013-14. 13 teams, 24 games each, running from September to April. All teams had time for a proper pre-season (or chance, because some will be bound not to do anything at all) and Aizawl wouldn't have the MPL or it would be earlier.
Also, you don't think Kerala Blasters have passionate supporters? Also aren't Atletico de Kolkata supporters made from East Bengal and Mohun Bagan fans? They are very passionate. FC Goa and NorthEast United fans? Also FC Pune City does have a women's side and youth team.
At this point I don't know what I want and just want to see something meaningful happen in Indian football.
Aizawl were lucky if Mohun Bagans clear goal against BFC by Katsumi Yusa allowed Or Sandesh Jhingan's clear goal against them in Aizawl stood they wouldn't have won
U can say the same about Mohun Bagans penalty against them in the 3-2 loss but their was some contact and players usually go down for slightest of touches
I agree Aizawl were consistent but they had luck on their side Bengaluru Failed,Bagan and EB messed up at crucial time
Also Aizawl were incredible at home and were consistent They would bounce back after a loss or a bad result If they had a better forward then Kamo they would have done even better
But they won due to some bad decisions and other clubs failing at crucial times
Partly, yes, but not only because of it. Look at Bengaluru FC for example. Roby Norales was shit but he wasn't cut until February. He came in after the season began, didn't have a proper pre-season to get really acclimated to the team, and after getting cut Bengaluru FC didn't have much time to find a proper replacement. Churchill Brothers, Minerva Punjab, and Chennai City had to assemble squads in a short span of time. Many Atletico de Kolkata players were from East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, many of them played in the final on the 18 December and 2-3 weeks later were in the I-League.
I won't ever say that the only reason Aizawl won was because of the above though. They were brilliant throughout the league and won big games when they counted such as against Mohun Bagan. However, I am interested in seeing how they would have done had a season like 2013-14 which arguably was the last "proper" I-League to be held happened or even if the Goan clubs never left. Dempo, Salgaocar, and Sporting would have all put up a good fight, better than CCFC and MPFC for sure.
Don't think if Mohun Bagan & EB play in the Top League, so called passionate ATK fans (consisting mostly of Mohun Bagan & EB fans) will waste their time in any ATK match which doesn't involve either of the big 2. Mr. Sanjeev Goenka will have lure ATK passionate fans by providing additional rebate in Electricity bills.
