In 2013-14 season, Arthur Papas joined Dempo SC. As everyone
expected, his bum chum Pailan Arrows players were expected to join en masse to
Dempo SC. The seniors like Climax Lawrence, Anthony Pereira and others were all
sacked. Pailan Arrows players were contracted to AIFF at that time. Pailan
withdrew sponsorship to AIFF at the last moment leaving the players and AIFF in
the lurch. Since the ISL was going to be held in Jan 2014 which then got
delayed further, IMG stepped in and tried to buy out the players from AIFF and
force them to join the ISL draft. Remember, the ISL was initially proposed to
be held in Jan 2014 which was then postponed to October 2014. However once the
ISL got postponed to October 2014, AIFF agreed to loan the Pailan players to
Dempo Sports Club. At that time five players from Pailan Arrows joined Dempo
SC- Pronay Halder, Alwyn George, Prabir Das, Narayan Das and Holicharan Narzary.
Their salaries at Pailan at that time were, 10 lacs, 12 lacs, 8 lacs, 8 lacs
and 8 lacs respectively. The players hadn’t been paid at Pailan for many months
and their salaries were absorbed by Dempo SC who took the players on loan from
September 2013 till 31st May
2014.
Now this is what happened in February 2014 which will shock
all of us. In February 2014, Arthur Papas called all the five players for a
contract extension for two more years (from 31st May 2014 till 31st
May 2016, which was also in line with his contract which was ending on 31st
May 2016). It is widely believed that Mr. Pratham Basu, the team manager at
Pailan Arrows (AIFF employee) who was very close to Papas and the boys was
inside the room during negotiations. It seems that Papas forced the players to
sign a player representation contract with Pratham Basu who was the team
manager at Pailan Arrows in the 2012-13 season and was also a full time
employee of AIFF. This was confirmed by one of the players who then had a
falling out with Papas. So Pratham Basu was inside the room while the Pailan
Arrows players were discussing their contracts and what happened was
astonishing. Pronay Halder salary was increased from 10 lacs to 40 and 50 for
two seasons. Alwyn George from 12 lacs to 35 and 45, Narayan Das from 8 to 26
and 35, Prabir Das from 8 to 19 and 25 and Holicharan Narzary from 8 to 25 and
30. Well, in the footballing world, this kind of increment sometimes does
happen but what creates a doubt is that Papas forced the players to sign the
player agent contract with Pratham Basu who as an AIFF employee cannot be an
agent. That too Papas forced the players to sign this contract just a month
before he would give them a contract extension. Also, very cleverly, Pratham
Basu formed a company called M.A.P.S
Future Sports with his brother Surajit Basu as the Director. As part of the
contract, the players had to pay Surajit Basu a commission of 7.5%.
Well, no prizes for guessing whether Papas too shared this
amount. The representation contract has been attached as proof. The players
signature has been removed to protect the identity of the player while it is
believed that voice conversations to this effect also exist but cannot be
revealed to protect the identity of the player. One of the player who revolted
was also benched in spite of being a good performer from February 2014 till May
2014, this can be confirmed by taking the data of Dempo’s line ups during that
period. After the players signed, as late as 2015, Pratham would still
regularly call the players and demand for commission for the contracts.
So this is what happened in short. Arthur Papas forces the
players to sign a player agent contract with Pratham Basu, who was an AIFF
employee at the time. Papas increases the player salaries by more than 200% and
the players have to pay a 7.5% commission to Pratham. When one player revolts,
Papas benches him. Some of the players pay a commission to Pratham out of fear
of being benched maybe. Pratham comes all the way from Kolkata to Goa during
the contract extension negotiations of the players and only Papas, Pratham and
the player are inside the room. Players do get astonishing increments in
football and the good performance of the players might have been the cause for
the Dempo officials to agree to Papas demands for that kind of money to the
players, however what they must have not known is the underhand dealings that
were going on.
Also, another interesting thing is that Mandaar and Romeo
contracts were also up for increments at that time and Romeo salary was
increased from 7 lacs to only 12 lacs while Mandar salary was increased from 4
lacs to only 10 lacs. Probably because they did not have Mr. Basu as their
agent.
Incidentally, Pratham Basu is now the team Manager at
Chennaiyin FC. Can one of the “Red Devils” in this group who is closely linked
to Chennaiyin FC now tell his puppet owner Vita Dani to take action against
this? Or would they resort to “setting” again like how they did in the Elano
case. God save Indian football!!!
@sam ... My money is on Mumbai, North East, FC Goa and another team to reach the semis. Mumbai and North East have been the most poor performers in the ISL so far. Reliance will be worried that another poor performance from them and the investors will lose interest. Hence they will reach the semis. Ditto for FC Goa as a poor performance by FC Goa would mean a slap on the face of ISL. Fans would start commenting that the old owners would have been better. the fourth team into the play-offs would be the team that serves Reliance's business interests the most.
