Menzes subbing Danmaiwa with Chullova was a master stroke by Menzes. Brandon put in a good shift and so did Jaime. Can't expect free flowing football in that ground. Tilak Maidan turf was in a better state last season.
With the domestic football season in full swing, several I-League teams have complained about the “poor quality” of telecast by the host broadcaster in the ongoing season. Teams like defending champions Minerva Punjab FC, former champions Churchill Brothers and new entrant Real Kashmir FC have complained of ‘stepmotherly’ treatment by the host broadcaster.
The teams have accused Star Sports of not giving similar importance to I-League as they do to Indian Super League (ISL) and Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).
Star telecasts I-League on Standard Definition (SD), while ISL and PKL are telecasted on High Definition (HD). Ranji Trophy matches are also shown on HD. I-League is beamed on Star Sports 3, which has no HD vertical.
“The telecast quality of ILeague matches is very poor. At times, it seems that we are watching a match that’s being telecast through a mobile phone,” Minerva Punjab FC owner Ranjit Bajaj told TOI.
“Honestly, we are tired of this attitude towards the I-League The I-League is recognised as the top official league of the country where the winner gets a chance to represent the country in the AFC Champions League. I have no complain against kabaddi or cricket, because they are popular sports in our country. But the same coverage should be there for I-League too,” he added.
Kushal Das, the general secretary of All India Football Federation (AIFF), however, dismissed these concerns. “The coverage is very good. We have no complains,” he said.
It is learnt that Star only has the telecast rights of I-League; the production rights aren’t with the channel. It is with Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), a wing of IMG-Reliance which is the marketing partner of AIFF and the promoter of ISL. TOI tried to reach Star but it refused to comment on the issue.
Real Kashmir FC co-owner Sandeep Chattoo espoused Bajaj’s views. “The number of cameras required to cover a football match properly isn’t there. For a kabaddi match, there are 15-20 cameras from various angles, but that’s not the case for an I-League game,” said Chattoo. “They show 10-year-old cricket highlights on HD, but can’t give quality broadcast for ILeague that the country’s biggest domestic football tournament deserves.”
Churchill Alemao, the owner of two-time winners Churchill Brothers, also feels the channel and AIFF give more importance to ISL.
