Bhutia played today for sikkim
As Sikkim United took the field against Sporting Clube de Goa in their first match of the final phase, the crowd was surprised to see Bhaichung taking position as a stopper-back. But the professional that he has been all throughout, Bhaichung adjusted fast and looked at ease as he kept the Sporting attacks at bay, much to the appreciation of the crowd.
“I’m comfortable in my new role – as a defender,” Bhaichung said. “I need to reach peak fitness at the earliest. And I didn’t do badly either. I was able to keep the two rival foreign strikers quiet,” Bhaichung boasted. Indeed he did during his 80-minute stay on the ground after which he was substituted.
Bhaichung paired with India International, N S Manju in the heart of defence and the duo complimented each other very well. And words of praise flew in from Manju.
“It’s quite exciting to play with Bhaichung and mind you, he has a great sense of anticipation.” Manju said.
Even as the match ended one-all, United’s coach Stanley Rosario sounded happy over Bhaichung’s performance. “He needs to be applauded. After playing as a striker for more than 17 years in the top tier, the manner in which he played like a matured defender deserves praise.”
It may be recalled that Bhaichung had played as a withdrawal forward during his early days with East Bengal.
