Vasco Sports Club are on a roll. Three wins from as many matches see them sitting pretty at the top of the I-League 2nd division final-round table with 9 points.
Not many did back them to start with such a bang. Cached by Gavin Arajuo, Vasco’s young guns haven’t been overawed by the situation. One needs to remember, unlike their rival compatriots, they don’t boast of any big-names in their ranks.
Their real test, however, lies ahead -- in the next round to be precise when they face Shillong Lajong FC, the local favourites -- presently breathing down their neck at the second place with 7 points.
After an initial promise, complacency got to Lajong when they threw away a two-goal cushion against United Sikkim in the third round to eventually split points with a 2-2 draw.
Another Shillong Club Ar-Hima, a point behind local rivals Lajong will be facing Sporting Clube de Goa in the next round. Their much-needed victory over Kolkata’s Mohammedan Sporting propelled them to the third spot and they hope to continue the momentum in the next round.
Much is expected from United Sikkim. Not that they have they have looked ordinary. Stanley Rosario’s side, have played some exciting football but have stayed a bit unlucky not to have picked up full points so far.
With Liberia’s captain John D. Meyongar and former Namibia captain Q N Jacobs in their squad, they are a quality side for sure. And let’s not forget Bhaichung Bhutia, Rennedy Singh and NS Manju are doing duty for them too.
The phase hasn’t been a sweet one so far for the two Kolkata teams -- Mohammedan Sporting and Southern Samity. Though a lot of football is still to be played, present form suggests, it would require something special from Mohammedan to be back in contention while Samity, lying at the bottom of the table, have a tough mountain to climb, much alike Sporting Clube de Goa.
Sporting presently lie at the 6th spot with 2 points from three matches.
Surprisingly, the winner of the Madurai leg Royal Wahingdoh, have had a disastrous final round so far. The much talked about Carlton Chapman coached side have been able to collect just one point so far, much to the disappointment of the local crowd.
Mohammedan Sporting 0-0 United Sikkim (0-1 John D. Meyongar (39') (Full Time)
