NEW DELHI: All India Football Federation president Praful Patel is hardly perturbed by JCT club's decision to disband and said that corporate interest in bankrolling new teams will not be reduced by the Phagwara-based side's pulling out.

"It's a decision taken by the JCT management. They must have been facing financial difficulty that led to them in disbanding the team. I don't think it's an alarming sign," the AIFF supremo said on Tuesday.

Although JCT's decision has sent shockwaves in the Indian football fraternity, Patel put up a brave face, stating that there are many business houses who have spoken to him about starting new clubs.

"JCT may have disbanded their team but we have many big corporate houses who have expressed keen interest in running football clubs. In fact, the Jindals are interested in starting a new club," Patel said.

Asked whether an alarming trend has started among the corporates to disband clubs, Patel took a dig at the JCT management, saying, "You need passion and professionalism to run a football club. Then only will you succeed."

The AIFF president, however, dismissed the possibility of personally speaking to JCT owner Samir Thapar requesting him to reconsider his decision of disbanding the club.

"Why should I speak to him? It's his decision. But definitely on AIFF's part we would have a dialogue with them."

When asked about JCT management mentioning the lack of interest and television coverage of I-League matches, Patel said, "I have said earlier that last year was a transition phase and things will be sorted out this year."

JCT players stare at a tense future

Ajay Singh dreamt of making it big when he left his modest home in Ropar last year and signed a two-year deal with JCT. The young striker, who comes from a poor background, did make his mark by scoring five of JCT's 17 goals in the I-League but today he is a devastated man.

“With JCT disbanding the team abruptly, Ajay has nowhere to go,” said a source in the team.

“A few clubs approached him immediately at the end of the I-League but he rejected those because he had a two-year contract with JCT. Now, no one knows from where he will receive his next month's salary,” the source said.

Ajay is not the only one to be affected by JCT’s decision. The shut down of the team has put at least 20 footballers, who were contracted with JCT, in trouble. There are several talented players like goalkeeper Pawan Kumar, midfielder Amandeep Singh or striker Gurtej Singh, who signed two-year contracts with the Punjab side last season only to find the team being closed without telling the players to find another club.

“They spend a meagre two crore last season to build a team. Perhaps they had the lowest budget among all the I-League teams. No wonder they got relegated," said a former JCT footballer in the national camp. “Pity they still could not sustain it,” he added.

Former JCT footballer Baldeep Singh, who currently plays for I-League champions Salgaocar, said JCT’s closure was a huge setback for football in Punjab but hoped the state would recover from the shock.

“JCT were an inspiration for every Punjab footballer but it should not be the end of the world for them. I hope more and more players from the state would emerge in the national scene in future," said Baldeep, who spent four seasons with the Phagwara club.

However, All India Football Federation (AIFF) sources said that a few big companies have shown initial interest in buying off the side. “Some of them did speak to us, but they have to talk to JCT management first,” said a senior AIFF official
