BLAST FROM THE PAST.....ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE!!
Much was made today of East Bengal's braving of the inclement weather and thrashing of Minerva Punjab 5-0 today...due credit to them....but in 1953, another East Bengal team, facing much more inclement weather--in Russia, and a far better opposition--Torpedo Moscow, gallantly fought on for a 3-3 draw...The team consisted of East Bengal's famous “Panchapandavas” (Five Pandavas): Apparao, P Venkatesh, PB Saleh, Dhanraj and Ahmed Khan....The second goal--a free- kick by Venkatesh was an absolute screamer
Just read in the Bengali daily Ganashakti: Six footballers of the club--V.P. Suhair, Prohlad Roy, Jiten Murmu, Koushik Sarkar, Samad Ali Mallick and Deepak Kumar--have been released by the club because the coach and management have belatedly realized that they could not find a place in the playing squad because of the presence of so many players...so they have been paid their full salary and asked to join some other club...these players are justifiably worried about their future because it is the middle of the season and nearly all teams have recruited their full quota of players...according to this source, the fourth foreigner, Amirov, has also been released because he has failed to impress in the two matches that he has played If this is true, it's a horrible, horrible news...shows up the club and its officials in poor light....there is not an iota of professionalism in this almost century-old club...didn't the management realize beforehand that that taking too many players--some of them playing in the same position--would be of no avail...who has given them the right to jeopardize the future of these footballers?...if the Kolkata clubs continue in such fashion, preening themselves on their past achievements and continue to wallow in mediocrity, they should be aware that they cannot take their fans for granted any more

Robin Singh is the new CR7 of East Bengal (in his sartorial choice)
