Former Wellington Phoenix star's novel way to support Indian drinking water project
An international charity providing fresh drinking water will get €10 ($17 NZ) from former Wellington Phoenix midfielder Matti Steinmann for every kilometre he runs in an Indian Super League game.
The German linkman starred for the Phoenix in the 2020 A-League but has since moved to SC East Bengal, where he is the club's top scorer this season.
He said: "For each kilometer that I run this season in the Indian Super League, I’ll donate €10. I’d be so grateful for your help, whether it’s a small contribution for each kilometer or game, a monthly commitment or just a one-time donation. Every cent makes a difference! The more that participate the better.''
Past studies have shown elite professional footballers run an average of 10 kilometres per game.
Midfielders, and wingbacks, tend to cover the greatest distances.
Steinmann's gesture could cost him over €100 ($NZ170) per game.
The former Germany under-20 international said all proceeds with his fundraising effort would go towards Viva con Agua's "trusted project in India that aims to provide better access to clean drinking water through rain water collection systems’’.
Viva con Agua is a charity formed in 2005 in Hamburg - Steinmann's home city - by Benjamin Adrion, a German lower league midfielder from the St Pauli club.
India is among 10 countries where the charity operates fresh drinking water projects.
East Bengal coach Tony Grant blamed the poor season on indian players who are of low quality and unable to play football with top class European players.
AIFF bans East Bengal for 2 years from doing any transfers as EB signed players illegally this season. This means EB is stuck with same team for next 2 years
'Player Status Committee' bans East Bengal from signing any players for 2 'transfer windows' as they found East Bengal guilty of 'umilaterally terminating contracts of 4 players, Pintu Mahata, Gurwinder Singh, Rakshit Dagar & ,Abash Thapa'.
If the reports are to be believed, the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) Players Status Committee (PSC) has given the club till March 31 to clear all the dues, failing which the ban will come into effect.
