  • I need to go check the records and see for myself who all did he score these seven goals against last season, that will tell me which defenders did he dump, Anwar Ali or Uga Opara or Bello Rasaq.or Sudhendran or Mahesh Gawli.
  • Chhetri scored against Dempo, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Pune, ONGC, HAL (2)

This is all based off going back into the history of Sunil Chhetri's wikipedia and whenever I saw I changed his stats I go back to those games.

Good teams. Sure 1 goal a game against the big clubs but who cares. Sunil is one amazing player and marketing yourself is fine. Heck even in America the players market themselves so much. We have 3 18 year old footballers in a commercial but Sunil, i dont know, I just think that sports players should market themselves in Beer commercials, sports commercials, TV commercials, banking commercials and such. What was Sunil advertising anyway.

Also I know your mad about Sunil leaving India then coming back then leaving again but you know what, GET USED TO IT! Do you know where the good American, Australian, Japanese, Korean players go! They dont play in there countries leagues. This is how it goes for top players in these countries...

They start there career at that club and stay for a while. Maybe for 2-5 seasons then they leave for Europe or America (in Indian Players cases) and then they come back to there homelands league when they are around 30-32 years old. Example....

American Superstar Claudio Reyna (former Manchester City player)... played in America from the ages of 1 to 21 then moved to Europe and made a name for himself and did not come back till he was 34. Or recently 23 year old Tim Ream for my New York Red Bulls left us for Bolton Wanderers. He only spend 2 seasons with us.

That is what I am saying. Also you also have to think about how much more money they are making. Tim Ream went from $4,000 a week to $30,000 a week. That is an extra $26,000 a week. That sort of money drives people mad. Cant blame Sunil for using Bagan as a stepping stone but what I am saying is if he joined Lajong or Pune or Prayag he would have gotten scouts more interested.

Do you think Scouts are now going to be interested in a player who is 27, got rejected twice abroad, and barely plays or scores for an Indian club. I bet Rangers have dropped interest already.

    Well, thats not club's fault.
    1) He gets to play whenever he is fit, so chances are given
    2) The scoring part - Everybody is assuming that all MB balls go to Odafa!!!! No dear, in fact Sunil get a lot of opportunities. More so, because Odafa is heavily marked, that gives opportunity for the other striker to utilize gaps. The fact is he is not in his prime fitness for most of the season (so going to Lajong or any other club won't have changed anything), and he is also missing a lot (including sitters).

Can anyone give a logical reason why Sunil joining a big club (MB, EB, Dempo, CB or whatever) can be a problem given that he gets to play all the matches when he is fit and he gets chances (isn't it foolish to think that at this level the supply is given to only 1 foreign striker, its not school game right?). Bhaichung Bhutia, after his JCT stint ('97 - That time JCT had a strong squad), always played (when in India) in either EB or MB along side the foreign strikers.

At the end of the day the fact is India lacks good strikers, and Sunil is the best we can have for our national team (at the moment). So, just cheer for him guys!!!

I am sorry but I dont buy it. I still think at a club like Shillong, Pune or Prayag he would have done much better. I mean 3 goals in 9 games this season. Give me a break. The man should be doing better than that. Also if Odafe is marked a lot by say 2-3 defenders than the defenders in India are REALLY SHIT because the man has around 19 goals in 17 games. Just face it, Sunil wont do much at Bagan.
  • Why can't folks be positive with every one like they are with the one they idolize, isn't this parochial ? When Odafa does well, in spite of being heavily marked (reminds of the head butting incident Keita the SCG defender did, that too inside the box which referee C R Srikrishna waved play on), its either the shitty level of defending in India, or the preponderance of balls being fed to him, whatever. When Chetri turns out to be a complete flop, just because he doesn't even SHOW UP and make himself available, it's everyone else's fault starting from the club officials, the moronic midfield and the club itself.

i always knew that chetri and bhutia had a close circle of baniya friends they hung out with, appears to me that they sponsor this network, otherwise why would the predominantly active members be so biased in their assessment of every one else other than chetri and bhutia.

Its a mix of passes that get fed to him and the bad defenders. You got guys like Ranty Martins and Odafe who get fed the ball a lot and are heavily marked yet get at least 1 goal a game.

I don't think the majority in Calcutta will have any issues if Chetri goes play for these clubs for a fraction of the 1 crore he is getting with MB. Even if he plays in Calcutta next season, he should not be paid a paisa more than 70 lakh, that too since someone like Allwyn George is getting 22 lakhs these days. I personally don't think either George deserves 22 lakh or chetri deserves 70 lakhs in purchase power parity terms.
  • i feel that sunil chettri is a good striker(based on Indian standard), but he lacks consistency. Last year he performed well for chirag(now prayag) but this year he has not done anything to justify the big amount he is getting in MMB. Ashim Biswas(Striker,MMB) also has 3 goals in i-league 2011-12 but i doubt if he gets even half of chettri's salary. And i think that ashim should hav been picked for afc challenge cup 30-member team simply coz he has scored more goals than abranches and sushil. Being a MMB fan i will not be unhappy if mmb officials decide to leave sunil for another foriegn striker. If u guys remember properly east bengal also left chettri coz he was just a mediocre striker in red and gold jersey and then probably he joined dempo and had a bit of success. He was a faliure in kolkata everytime he went there and is doing that reputation no harm this year as well.....so maybe its time for sunil to leave kolkata again and look for other club which will offer him big money.....

If I compare him with strikers who have played in Kolkata over the years ( I mean last three decades and considering only Indian players, starting with the Subhash Bhowmicks, Sisir Ghoshs, then I M Vijayan and finally Baichung Bhutia [until 2006]), Sunil is pretty mediocre by Kolkata standards, forget international standards and to hide that he constantly criticizes Kolkata football to the English speaking media citing lack of infrastructure, professionalism. At the same time, folks like Tolgay are giving interviews to Australian media praising Kolkata football. Joe Morrison, Palmer, Burridge of ten action, then Rob Banh, most recently Scott O'Donnell came down to Kolkata and they did not find it as bad as Chetri and Bhutia made it look to the media, especially during the Houghton era. Interestingly Bhutia started criticizing Kolkata football when his efforts to prolong his career at the cost of the club's success was thwarted by none other than Karim Bencharifa, then coach of Mohun Bagan, a foreigner himself. I have followed Sunil from the beginning of his career when he first came to play in Calcutta from Delhi, man, was he an eyesore then ? He did not even know the basics and coach Subrata had to spend hours with him trying to work on his game, the benefits of which finally bore fruit when he switched to JCT. Even for East Bengal later, he flopped missing a penalty in a very decisive derby. He is just not the quality to succeed in as competitive a level as Calcutta football.
