If a PIO players want to play for India, they have to take up Indian citizenship. A person must also stay in India for 12 months before applying for citizenship.
how this will work? they need to come here and register? 12 month stay?
Nothing is final but with BJP support these guys have started cooking. They have done some homework and I really hope they can get us some sort of solution
Maybe but also looking at the fact that they have a 24 PIO shortlist that they are wanting to explore a plan. Hope they can come up with some temporary solution without those players relinquishing their citizenship.
Hope india will allow dual citizenship which is highly unlikely. Given the population and highest human exporter to the world - India will NOT allow dual citizenship. if they do, which will be great for most of the NRI/OCI.

Bro first of all they setup a taskforce which would identify talent for 6 months.
Reality is the data is widely available and you don't need 6 months to identify talent @ashindia can do it in a day. And stimac himself has identified more than half these guys and has been in peronal contact ever since he became India's manager. I know he has spoken extensively to Sarkaria and Dhanda and has contacted multiple kids playing in English academies.
Secondly I have spoken to people working in AIFF they did say that response from govt was positive but still there is a big step here.
One thing is govt needs to allow but also this will be a two edge sword if they allow for football they should for all other sports too else you'd get cases in courts and they'll just block it.
If this doesn't work then you have to offer citizenship to foreign talent. This very tough for individuals to do so. Though they want people to live in India for 12 months the process takes much longer. It took Arata Izumi over 5 years and he had an Indian dad and married a local girl. For example Iran gave Saman Ghoddos a passport within a month and he never moved their for a season, such thing is not possible here.
So faar the current AIFF regime is all talks with very less action which itself another discussion all together. But reality is not to get excited untill anything actually happens.
PIO used to play earlier for India. Some of us may remember Prakash Amritraj playing for India. But the 2008 policy decision of Sports Ministry debarred those not holding Indian passport from representing the country. A policy decision is reversible. The player need not hold Indian passport in that case, i.e. if it is reversed. A PIO/OCI card may suffice. However, there are complications. The policy was brought in after a wide consultation from sports federation and they overwhelmingly supported it The homegrown players will obviously raise their voice against reversal. It is not impossible to reverse though, if there is a wide-ranging support and the government is convinced.
