  • UNBEATEN CHURCHILL STAY ATOP

Churchill Brothers SC maintained their unbeaten run in the Airtel Goa Pro-League with yet another thrashing 4-0 win over Goa Velha SC in the 9th round match at Duler ground, here on Tuesday.

By grabbing all the three points the Red Machines have now cemented their place at the top of the standings with 23 points from a possible 27, while Goa Velha stay at 7th with 10 points.

Balwant Singh, Jaison Vales, Thangjam Singh and Alesh Sawant were on target for the Red Machines.

With the I-League just around the corner, Churchill coach Mariano Dias preferred to rest most of their key players. Lalit Thapa continued in goal while Sanjay Balmucho, Bikramjit Singh and Balwant Sigh started for the Reds. Soma Korgaokar made his debut in goal for Goa Velha.

It was a one-sided first half which was entirely dominated by the Churchill outfit. Goa Velha hardly had any ball possession and were unable to muster anything of note throughout the half.

Goa Velha keeper Soma Korgaokar was put to the test as early as in the 7th minute when he tipped U-20 Alesh Sawant’s long-range attempt that was heading into the top corner.

The backline of Goa Velha seemed to be gelling well with Churchill attack coming in with some timely tackles and brave blocks. But they were guilty of conceding the opener in the 31st minute as they left Balwant Singh unmarked, who headed home from Thangjam Singh set piece delivery.

The Red Machines doubled their lead two minutes later when Anthony Barbosa combined with Balwant and the latter in turn relayed the ball to Jaison Vales, who was off balance but still managed to connect well enough to put the ball into the back
    of the net, 2-0.

Besides the two goals it was a very drab performance from both sides void of any excitement or drama.

On crossing over, it took Churchill just five minutes to extend their lead. Jaison Vales set up Thangjam Singh and he curled the ball past a helpless keeper.

The 56th minute saw the introduction of the influential midfielder international Lenny Rodrigues replacing Bikramjit Singh. And minutes after his coming, he was involved in the buildup of the fourth goal as he found Jaison with an incisive pass who in turn played a defence splitting pass to Alesh Sawant, who finished impressively with the outside of his boot.

It was only in the 81st minute, Goa Velha finally managed to get a shot on target. Substitute Royden Camelo shot from distance was easily dealt with by keeper Lalit Thapa, who was a mere spectator throughout the 90 minutes.

Less than two minutes after the interval, Sporting Goa took the lead after captain Victorino Fernandes tapped in a cross from Jovel Martins.

    SIX-STAR AGNELO SINKS CAVELOSSIM

St Cruz Club of Cavelossim posted a resounding 7-0 victory over Margao Sports Club in the Airtel Goa Pro-League relegation round match played at Duler Stadium here on Tuesday.

Agnelo was the star of the evening netting 6 impressive goals while Mario Mascarenhas added his name to the score sheet in the dying minutes. With this victory Cavelossim have sealed their spot in the next season’s Goa Pro-League, while Margao SC, who are yet to earn a single point in the league, have
    been demoted.

Marcus Fernandes came close to opening the scoring for Cavelossim as in the very 4th minute he easily dribbled past three defenders but his final touch was poor and gave opposition keeper Rahul Yadav a chance to snatch the ball. Minutes later Marcus was once again in the thick of actions as he set up Inacio Colaco but the latter shot wide of the target.

In a one-sided game that was entirely dominated by Cavelossim, Agnelo D’Souza opened the floodgates in the 25th minute when he headed home following a goal mouth melee from Marcus’s flag kick. Four minutes later, Wilton Gomes put Agnelo through on goal with an incisive pass and the latter fired the ball past the keeper to double his side’s lead.

Before the half time whistle, Agnelo completed his hat-trick as he dribbled past the keeper and slotted into an empty net after a fine through-ball from Inacio.

On crossing over, Margao made a positive start and got their first shot on target with Wilfred Gomes shot from distance. At the other end, Agnelo put the victory beyond doubt when he scored his fourth goal with an opportunistic strike from a Mario Mascarenhas cross.

Agnelo went on to net two more goals and completed a stunning double hat-trick.

Mario completed the rout with a stiff grounder from 25 yards out in the dying minutes of the match.

Six-star Agnelo D’Souza was the automatic choice for player of the match award.

    MELWIN BRACE DOWNS GOA VELHA

Wilred Leisure SC eased past Goa Velha SC 2-0 in the relegation round match of the Airtel Goa Pro-League at Duler Stadium here on Wednesday.

After netting a fine hat-trick in the last match Wilred’s Melwin Fernandes continued his impressive form as he scored both the goals for his team and helped them secure all three points.

The game started off at a decent pace with both teams vying to keep the ball possession but in the 8th minute Melwin put an abrupt halt to Goa Velha’s positive start when he dribbled past two players and squeezed his shot into the near post from a tight angle to put Wilred in the lead.

From then on Wilred dominated the entire proceedings and could have extended the lead when a well-crafted move between veteran Johnny D’Cruz and Agnelo Colaco saw the latter send in a dangerous cross but Melwin was unfortunate to see his header go wide off the target.

Goa Velha never recovered after conceding the early goal and their forward line were unable to muster even a single attempt at goal.

Midway through the first half Goa Velha coach Lino Pereira brought in Royden Camelo for Francis Fernandes and the substitution worked almost immediately as Royden nearly found the equaliser with a power-packed freekick from a distance but it deflected out for a corner.

After the breather, Wilred continued from where they left and Jaison Pereira forced Dietmar Fernandes into making a spectacular diving save as he fired a rasping effort from the edge of the box.

Dietmar was proving a tough nut to crack and he was the only one keeping Wilred from extending their lead. But he finally succumbed to the pressure in the 69th minute when Melwin fired a loose ball into the empty net after Deitmar had made the initial save from Bazileo.

Goa Velha came to life only in the last ten minutes of the match. Royden almost pulled one back with another brilliant freekick but Macklas Moraes pushed the ball over the cross bar. Wilred survived the final minutes of pressure to secure full points.

    LAXMI PRASAD TROUNCE MARGAO 6-1

Tuff Laxmi Prasad SC registered a resounding 6-1 victory over Margao Sports Club in the relegation round match of the Airtel Goa Pro-league, played at Duler Stadium here
    on Monday.

Laxmi Prasad had beaten Margao SC 5-0 in their earlier league match and they continued their dominance over the rivals thrashing them 6-1 in Monday’s meet. Avelino Fernandes scored an impressive hat-trick while Alvito Miranda scored a brace and substitute Joelif Simoes got his name on the score sheet. Margao scored a consolation goal through Clinton Niasso.

With this victory Laxmi have 14 points to their name while Margao’s nightmare continues as they have now conceded shocking 59 goals from just 11 matches and are yet to open their account.

Tuff Laxmi’s first attempt at the goal came when Shashank Ashwekar sent in a pin point cross from the right flank to Alvito Miranda but the latter sent his header straight into the hands of Margao’s keeper Parsappa Harijan.

After making a comparatively good start Margao faded away as the match progressed and Laxmi capitalised on it and opened the scoring in the 31st minute. Medio Freiman Peixoto slipped in a pass to Avelino Fernandes who made no mistake with the
    finish, 1-0.

Barely two minutes after the opener, Laxmi Prasad extended their lead. Good combination play between Freiman and Xamaro Rodrigues saw the latter set up Avelino who slotted home for his brace.

Minutes before the half time whistle Royce Cardozo almost reduced Margao’s deficit but his curling effort was tipped over the crossbar by keeper Reagan Juliao.

At the other end, Avelino set up Alvito who found himself in acres of space and he punished Margao’s poor defending with a powerful side foot finish into the far post to make it 3-0.

The 51st minute saw Avelino complete his hat-trick after Alvito returned the favour and set him up on this occasion.

The Mapusa side showed no signs of slowing down and netted their fifth goal a minute later through Alvito.
Substitute Joelif Simoes completed the rout when he tapped in a low cross from Alvito.

Margao earned a penalty late in injury time when Nigerian Godwin Uvieghara brought in a clumsy tackle on Monty Valadares inside the danger zone and substitute Clinton Niasso converted a consolation goal. Alvito Miranda was adjudged the Most Valuable Player.
