Language based states are only heightening the internal schism of India. They did not do any favours to the concept of the country as a whole. India remains a collection of states rather than a country.
Is it not obvious that India will remain as a collection of states rather than a country, but still maintain a sense of commonness. Any Indian living staying abroad when asked hardly answers that he is Punjabi, Tamil or Bengali etc. Instead they say I am Indian.
India has always been a collection of states with everyone having their own identity. Even when she was ruled by a single ruler, the individual states were allowed to retain their identity with their own set of rules and traditions.
Some good points above. From purely development point of view, Geographical divisions are more conducive.
Punjab, Haryana, Himachal pradesh developed more when they were one state. Massive Irrigation projects were possible like Bhakra Nangal Dams and Canal network ensued Green Revolution. When states became small, conflicts start over sharing of water, funds and projects got stalled such as Sutlej Yamuna link Canal. Punjab cannot go and build anything in Himachal Pradesh as its a different state. Himachal will not build anything as they are hilly landlocked state and benefit goes to farmers of other state. Haryana needs more water but Punjab will first give it to their farmers. So all three states suffered by becoming separate on the basis of language.
North East states would have benefited more economically if they had access to Chittagong port or mighty rivers of Bengal but it went to other country.
On the other hand, people do debate that culture, language is preserved if they have state of their own. They have their own valid points.
We are inching closer to the solution for the Chittagong issue you mentioned. Bangladesh is almost becoming a colony of India in its contemporary sense.
Yes, that port was built by India in 2016 as a part of kaladan transit project. but it will be operation fully by 2019. still chittagong is a better option for us. with hasina bound to win again india can finally hope to get the access
