We are a 3rd world country which struggles with over population.

Unemployment is at all time high and economy is crashing. Last thing we need is letting refugees in.

Bengal and North East are scared because they'd be the ones who'll be affected more. The refugees from Bangladesh will flock to these states.

Sometimes you as a government must listen to the people and stop something that will harm us as a country. But people don't really care pride is all that matters to them.

More then that, such steps create polarisation of public on ethnic, religious, caste lines and political parties benefit in elections. Focus gets diverted from economy, infrastructure,  agriculture,  jobs.

Many such steps have affected the country hard. Demonitisation and GST are prime example yet nobody talks because media says it was a masterstroke.

    Media plays a major role.

Nobody talks about UP which is easily the worst governed state in India with high crime rates, poor infrastructure and rowdies running the show. But will flock onto Delhi,WB, Kerala because it has a different government.

Agree that lot of common people suffered due to Demonetization..

but GST thing is not new... Just the name is difference.. it all started in Congress govt during Rajiv Gandhi era, followed by P.V.Narasimha Rao & Vajpayee..  good that we have different slabs and I agree 28% slab is too much and there are few other loop holes.. but hope things will get settled down..

Right. DeMo was a disaster. But GST is the best thing that has ever happened to India.

We should have a citizenship register including all the citizens of India so that government services and welfare can be better targeted to the beneficiaries. Ideally, it should be a single citizenship card for Aadhaar, PAN, Voter's, Driving license, and Ration Card.

However i dont agree to the idea of rendering people stateless having been in India for decades for lack of documents.

So how to tackle this problem (siphoning the state's benefits by outsiders)?
  • SamyajitSamyajit Kolkata1246 Points
The number of outsiders is minuscule as compared to our population and in this process of sifting the outsiders from Indians, we end up spending much more on them than we do on citizens. Eg: Assam NRC meant a spending of 3000 cr to identify 19 lakh foreigners, of whom many may actually not be foreigners. We spend an infinitesimal fraction of this on our healthcare. As far as I remember, Tripura govt. stopped free healthcare because it had a 20 cr debt.

The original figure of 40 lakhs were a realistic figure for 'foreigners'. You know you can forge documents good to get away from the list. 50% escaped the NRC. And 40 lakhs would be quite a percentage for a state like Assam.

In WB, the figure would be much much higher (estimate is nearing 80 lakhs). And that would be 9-10% of the state population. Think of the people who sneaked to other cities through WB.
