This is Sector 42 Hockey Stadium. Well Chandigarh already has one more stadium Sector 42 Hockey Stadium besides Mohali Hockey stadium. So they got two big International Hockey stadiums in one city. They are Government built stadiums-thats why they are there. Hopefully one day we wll see football stadiums also.

Hockey is a huge thing in punjab/haryana so it is not a surprise they got a huge stadium also Haryana CM is a sports lover and had vastly improved sports infranstruce for olympic sports with their players getting pretty good allowance..

You cant really compare them with other state... if we can get football based huge stadium it can only be at goa/kolkatta/Kerala.. may be one of NE states but i doubt any state goverment will be interested in creating one

State Governments give jobs to players and medalists at Asian Games, Olympics. When these ex-players reach higher posts, they will influence Govt. decisions to spend in their field. Punjab is full of ex-hockey players and thus, their Govt. has spent lot of money on Hockey. Not only Punjab, it is nice to see Ranchi, Bhibaneswar and now Raipur coming up in organising international Hockey Torunaments. In all Olympic Sports, players are given jobs by different Government organisations.
Cricket is number 1 sport, so every state has done well in creating infrastructure.

Football is different. We do not allow any Government teams. So I dont think much investemtn can come from Government in building Football Specific stadiums, Thus we are left with Athletics stadiums.

It is upto Football loving states like Kerala, Goa, West bengal and NE to create more Football specific stadiums. Goa is doing it.
IPL or HIL will not build any stadium. Cricket or Hockey did not close down Ranji trophy or any Government Hockey team/tournament for the sake of IPL, HIL. Other activities carry on and thus we see new infrastructure.
Same way IMG-reliance will not build any stadium. Sadly we are closing down all other Institutional teams, Football activities, tournaments and now we wonder who will build any stadiums.

Personally, I'd like the government to focus on sports which could or has potential to add to the country's GDP as well as give money to the athlete. That would be Cricket, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi, Basketball, Tennis, Boxing and Badminton.

In any other sport, the athlete usually ends up at the mercy of a government job which may or may not happen.
