The issue is not about Airport, it is the designation of "International Airport". Aizawl and Imphal do have airports - A319 of Air India do fly there. Shillong also got Airport with Alliance Air ATR 42 or 72 flying there. Due to Runway constraint, bigger airplanes cannot land there and no market for International flights. Political situation will prevent direct international flights for a long time in future.
Airport in Sikkim is also going to be on the same line. Jamshedpur should first think about Domestic Airport-no commercial flight is alllowed to land as of now.
Bagdogra and Guwahati both have International Airports(Druk Air connecting Bhutan, Bangkok)-that makes Siliguri and Guwahati eligible for International Matches.
@thebeautifulgame What happened to that Kazi Nazrul Airport of Durgapur? So much fanfare, is it even open for any flight yet?
@munna219777 I'm offended :P On a more serious note, Kazi Nazrul Airport, which isn't in Durgapur but at Andal, has daily flights to Kolkata that can carry 14 passengers (excluding captain and staff) :P
@archak My hometown Kota is connected to Jaipur with a Cessna Caravan aircraft which is 8 seater. Supreme Airlines. Long long way before designating as International Airport. The funny thing is that website of the airline has this pic
Yes, lots of fizz about the airport, followed by a fizzle...The PM and some celebrities did board a flight, then operations almost stopped, now it has started again...kind of a stop-start thing...frankly, the people of Durgapur, except some of the nouveau riche, give a damn about it...what Durgapur needs is better infrastructure and generation of employment to retrieve its glory days, not an airport at the moment http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/logistics/private-airport-at-durgapur-zooms-back-into-business/article9644769.ece
with the subsidy system for smaller airports, if it kicks off, likes of Aizawl/jamshedpur may get connected domestically. International airports though may never come.
Aizawl is already Domestic Airport for many many decades now. Jamshedpur or Durgapur types may get connected with small airplanes but then thats not enough for International Airport and Indternational Matches as per AFC criteria.
