The refurbished Tilak Stadium in Vasco will be inaugurated on April 4 with the I-League match between Salgaocar and United Prayag, provided the AIFF clears it for telecast.
Following an inspection by SAG’s Executive Director, Sandip Jacques along with Raj Gomes (Salgaocar), Macario Rodrigues (Churchill Bros), Victor Fernandes and Angelo Albquerque (Sporting Clube de Goa), Armando Colaco and Abhijit Patil (Dempo), Savio Messias and Adlair (GFA) it was agreed to complete all the remaining, minor works and also test the floodlights.
All work is expected to be completed by March-end with some practice/training matches being held so as to test the new arrangements including the working of floodlights. Actually, the work was to be completed in last week of October, but there has been undue delay as there was a delay in the submission of plans by the consultant, a source indicated.
The floodlights were switched on later on, but could not bear the full load and as such tripped after sometime as the generator was not set for full load. The problem will be rectified soon, a source disclosed and added that during the period that the lights were on, the illumination was very good.
Matches for the four Goan I-League clubs will be organized by GFA with the organizing committee consisting of the Mormugao zone representatives in GFA, GFA office-staff/officials and the participating club representatives. The GFA zonal representatives are Savio Messias, Prakash Kamat and Lawrence Gomes. It is not known if Savio would be given the main responsibility or any duty, given his expertise and vast experience. It has beena normal practice now with the present GFA dispensation to sideline Savio, although he has been duly elected by the clubs from Mormugao Zone along with two others.
A Vasco based citizen gives review of the renovated Tilak Maidan
"The flood lights don't seem to be safe. As per best practice floods lights are always fixed at four corners. The way these lights are fixed it doesn't look like it will stay for long never the less it may cause serious disaster. Overall poor planning!"
