Expecting home grown talents to play in foreign leagues is like a person expecting to become a doctor without even clearing 10th board exams. Just kidding
Homegrown talent will not come as simple as that...for how many years have we been trying? Even countries like Germany, France, etc have to depend on naturalization and closer home countries like China, Qatar, etc. have to depend on the same. Of course, we don't need naturalization but what's the harm in using a few PIO's here and there. It may not be a long-term process but at least for God's sake let's start somewhere. We are too 'holier than thou' when it comes to the issue of PIO. There is no shame in it. We need a big performance from our NT in the next few years or else we will be having the same discussion in the next 10 years as well.
PIO issue is not solved in indian football forum or by AIFF. This issue is being talked only by indian football fans and not in any other sport . Any Indian Govt be it BJP or Congress the dual nationality bill won't pass for any reason. The best we can expect is to speed up the citizenship for athletes who are willing to let go of their original nationality .
@Sanjeev Biswas compared to other countries it is difficult for Indian diaspora to represent India in sports because
1.Unlike other countries India doesn't allow dual nationality ( due to legitimate reasons)
2. FIFA doesn't let players represent any other country than its origin country unless they hold the citizenship of that country and they can prove a clear connection to that country ( at least one of their parents or grandparents need to be born in that country) or player has to have lived in that country for 5 yearly continuously.
2nd condition can be satisfied easily for other countries since most countries allow duel nationality. so people have to surrender their other nationality in order to be an Indian citizen ( which again a very lengthy process), As @Lord_Pessi said it is something only Indian football fans want, and government wont be willing the citizenship rule for sake of Indian football team when the disadvantages of such move substantially outweigh the benefits coming out of it.
The difference between the highest and the second-highest active goalscorer is huge, while the no. of goals scored by the third-highest goalscorer is shocking to say the least!!
Tells a lot about the current state of Indian football!!
PIOs - is little more complicated at this point for our NT - i guess. We cannot expect our players to play like established players. It has taken them 40-50 years to get to where they are now. We just started 6-7 years back - give it till next cycle of this Asian Cup - without touching/disturbing the entire set up/coaches etc - my guess is we would be beating - Ban, Afg kind of teams regularly. AIFF - needs to focus on organizing more matches/tournaments at junior level - once the covid is sorted out. Focus on the clubs and local tournaments and regional level tournaments ... it will slowly start producing quality players at national level. Hope this COVID is taken care by end of this year in INDIA.
Let's talk about PIOs and other aspects of Indian football in the appropriate threads and keep this thread for discussions about the Afghanistan match for now
