champions HDFC hold nerves to emerge champions Wednesday, January 28, 2015 MUMBAI: HDFC showed steely nerves and accuracy as they came through two penalty shootout duels to be crowned champions of the 8th Fairplay knockout football tournament organised by the Bombay Football Referee’s Association on the occasion of the country’s Republic Day celebrations. The HDFC outfit proved good marksmen as they defeated Century Rayon 5-4 in a crucial tie-breaker in the final played at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel. After the match finished goalless, the tie was extended into the penalty shootout and HDFC emerged successful with Ketan Kalgutkar, Nigel D’Souza, Sheldon Benny, Nelson Cardoz and Dujon Koli, all converting from their attempts, while Century Rayon managed to score through Bishow Thapa, Manhar Sakiya, Mukund Prasad and Yogesh Maid. Earlier in the semi-finals, HDFC overcame G.M. Sports 4-2 also via the tie-breaker after the teams were locked goalless at the end of normal time. Kalgutkar, Cardoz, D’Souza, Benny were bang on target for the victors, while only Clyde Noronha and Varin Mehta found success for G.M. Sports. In the other semi-final, Century Rayon riding on Manhar Sakiya’s lone strike prevailed over Young Boys by a narrow 1-0 margin. Results – Semi-finals: Century Rayon 1 (Manhar Sakiya) beat Young Boys 0. HDFC 4 (Ketan Kalgutkar, Nelson Cardoz, Nigel D’Souza, Sheldon Benny) beat G.M. Sports 2 (Clyde Noronha, Varin Mehta).
