ISL 2020/21 - Robbie Fowler named East Bengal coach

"We have signed the contract last night (Thursday) and Robbie Fowler is expected to join the side directly in Goa within a week," Bangur, who has acquired a majority stake in East Bengal, confirmed the development to PTI from Dubai.

Fowler was previously head coach at A-league side Brisbane Roar.

"As of now, we have offered him a two-year contract which could be extended in due course," Bangur said. Former India captain Rennedy Singh will be Fowler's deputy. Rennedy is a former East Bengal captain.

The owner and managing director of Shree Cement Limited, who has acquired a majority stake of 76 per cent, further revealed that the team will be known as SC East Bengal as they make it a 11-team ISL.

"It could be Sporting Club East Bengal or Shree Cement East Bengal as per your interpretation. We as a corporate group cannot prefix 'Shree Cement' to East Bengal so we have decided the team as 'SCEB," he said.

Bangur said the first priority would be to make up for the lost time. "We are already short on preparation, and will start with a handicap. So he will assemble the squad as early as possible in Goa. We will look to make a competitive side," Bangur said.

Can anyone tell whether it is for the first time that any club in India has appointed a set piece coach?

Can't believe SCEB selected Fowler over Sven Goran Ericsson and Jose Peckerman. Either he came cheaper, or FSDL forced him on the club.

I think it's the money angle. Sacristan reportedly pulled out because of that. At the same time, Fowler seems to be a decent option. He was good with Roar (a rather underfunded side), is young and hungry. He is looking to go big, EB might be the launchpad.

ISL: East Bengal show the way by hiring a setpiece coach in Terence McPhillips

The concept of having a set-piece coach is alien to Indian football and no Indian club has made such a specific appointment.

Setpieces play a very important role in modern football as nearly 50 per cent of a team's goals in a season comes from dead-ball situations. Top teams across the world deploy innovative methods to take their setpieces and convert them into goals.

Almost every top club in the world have a specialist coach just dedicated to work with the setpieces of the team. Recently Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta recruited setpiece coach Andreas Georgson who used to work as Head of setpieces and Individual development at Brentford.

A setpiece coach not just innovates the taking the setpieces and convert them into goals but they also help a team defensively while defending the opposition's setpieces.

It is a specialist's job and East Bengal have become the first Indian club to hire a setpiece coach.
