  • Interesting read on Hima das's  recent achievement (copied from twitter use Swaroop Swaminathan)

Remember when the Indian Under-17 football beat a random assortment of kids from the lower tiers of the Italian league. That was repackaged as India U-17 d. Italy U-17. And more than a few people lost their shit for a few hours before they realised what had happened. Hima Das' five gold medals at random meets in Poland and Czech Republic is a bit like that. The quality of the meets, for want of a better phrase, are glorified Sunday leaguers. Her competition was so poor not winning them would have caused a meltdown. None of the 20 athletes she has faced since July 2 have a higher personal best than her, for starters. Several athletes are specialists over indoor 60m or 100m hurdles. One, shockingly enough, stopped T&F for a while to compete in shot put and javelin. This athlete got back to T&F only last year. Then there is this story from the third race. Out of the original field of six, two withdrew, making it a field of four. It's a bit like tennis' World No 100 beating a bunch of players ranked outside the top 250. (The actual rankings of the athletes correspond roughly). Two of her five events were ranked an 'F' by IAAF, the worst of the recognised meets. The other three is an 'E', the second worst. That ought to explain the level she is/was competing in. Sure, support her. But first think about it. Elite athletes DON'T EVER take part in five meets in three weeks. These are mickey mouse meets. Don't get swayed by nationalistic bs just because there is a smiling athlete with the flag. A last point. Yesterday's 400m was an all-Indian final. If you don't understand the level of competition from this one fact, you never will. Apologies for the spam.
Final thing. Hima Das, over 200m this year, is the 125th fastest woman this year. Across 400m, she is 74th. Kindly hold on to those 'she is a sureshot Olympic gold contender' pieces for a bit longer. If anything, that's bound to put undue pressure on her. She is NOT AT THAT LEVEL

Want to know her REAL level? First, see if she qualifies for the Worlds and Olympics (not through rankings but by time). Then, she if she is able to progress past her heats and get into the semifinal and final.

In latest 400m final, she won the race with 52.09 , qualification standard for world championships is 51:80 and Hima Das has time till September 1st week and it should not be a problem for her to qualify based on timing . If she does well in world championships , her ranking will also improve...

Olympic qualification mark is 51:20 and she has a personal best of 50.79..  I hope she will qualify based on timing rather than ranking...

Also these analysts need to understand that she had an injury and out for a while and rankings are mainly  based on current & previous calendar year performance... even current 400m Olympic winner,  Shaunae Miller is not even in top 50..

Participating in such low level races with average timings as a part of preparation & rehabilitation is fine. Many Athletes do it.

People are surprised by the level of jubiliation and chest thumping with titles given as World Champion, Golden Girl by media and politicians which is far from truth.
Imagine Virat Kohli celebrating a century in Club Cricket of Delhi. People will find it massively awkward !!!

Mary Kom wins gold in President's Cup ahead of world championships

Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom claimed the gold medal without breaking a sweat in the 23rd President's Cup, asserting her supremacy in a lop-sided 51kg bout final in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia on Sunday.

The Olympic bronze medallist pugilist decimated Australian April Franks 5-0.

The 36-year-old Indian had also won a gold medal at the India Open boxing tournament in May, but skipped the Asian Championships as part of a larger plan to enhance her chances of Olympic qualification.
