More money for the Chinese league ...

Le Sports, the subsidiary of China’s entertainment company LeEco, have reportedly acquired the exclusive internet media rights to Chinese Super League during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

As stated in a news story posted today by www.caixin.com, the expected value for this deal is up to RMB 2.7 billion (US $414.18 million). A news conference will be held to disclose more details.

  • Massive steps by Chinese League!! Some very popular names heading to Land of Dargons!! Exciting times for Asian Football.

However, the gulf of quality of football between these developed countries (Saudi Arabia, Australia, Japan and now China) and rest is now huge. I dont know how is it going to affect the rest including India.

Despite their new A-League extension, the Phoenix won't be providing a superannuation fund for washed-up players from Europe, chairman Rob Morrison says.

    19 February 2016

Wellington Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison says the rejuvenated A-League club has no intention of providing end-of-career nest eggs for big-name European football players.

Wellington's long wait for their licence renewal ended on Friday with the announcement of an extension which comprises an immediate four-year deal with two three-year extensions dependent on a number of targets being met.

Morrison said improving on-field performance was an important part of the equation, and there were two ways of doing that.

One was developing young players, as the Phoenix did through "significant investment" in its football academy.

"The other side is, how much money do you want to spend on buying players?

"We've always been of the view that there's no sense in providing a superannuation fund for washed-up players coming from Europe," Morrison said.

"That's not what the club has been about."

Morrison said Wellington's investment in marquee players centred around getting value for money, with Dutch midfielder Roly Bonevacia a prime example.

Striker Nathan Burns, last season's Johnny Warren Medal winner after thumping home 13 goals for Wellington, and playmaking midfielder Michael McGlinchey were other Wellington marquee signings.

"We've never said that marquee players aren't part of the strategy. What we have said is we're not going to go out and buy high-price players simply to try and get bums on seats," Morrison said.

"There's no sense us going and buying an [Alessandro] Del Piero.

"I cannot understand that sort of strategy."

Wellington hasn't always hit the jackpot with marquee signings, last month releasing Dutchman Jeffrey Sarpong after the former AFC Ajax striker failed to fire in 13 appearances, scoring just one goal.

"It's not like we don't go and spend on these guys. The key is finding guys who've still got years left in them," Morrison said.

"One of the keys out of this 10-year deal is that you're going to see some pretty good signings coming through."

Someone who fits that bill is Melbourne Victory midfielder Kosta Barbarouses, who began his career with the Phoenix in 2008.

The 26-year-old All White's contract at the Victory expires at the end of the season, and it's been reported he's signed a six-figure, three-year contract at the Phoenix from next season.

No-one from Wellington would confirm any details around the potential signing, although coach Ernie Merrick did say the licence renewal made signing - and re-signing - players a lot easier.

"We're pretty keen to have a very exciting squad next year, and you're not allowed to ask me about any signings I've made - I'll let you know as soon as it's all done and dusted."
