Birachandra Memorial Sporting Club, Manipur suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to Thailand in the Manchester United Premier Cup South East Asian Leg to end their campaign in the semi-final at Phukhet, Thailand.
The Indian boys had defeated the Thais 2-1 in their group league match. But in the semi-final, luck favoured the home side as they scored the only goal of the match with just two minutes away from regulation time. Thailand eventually won the title.
The match was an evenly contested one with the Indian representatives the better side throughout the 90 minutes. They played a high pressing game and created chances after chances but failed to convert any of them.
Occasionally, the home team came up with good runs but they too couldn’t beat the spring-footed goalkeeper Romario. The home team raised their tempo in the 2nd half, and came close to scoring on two occasions.
However, luck ran out for the Indians in the 88th minute when a beautiful cross from the left was headed in by the Thai Striker, inches away from the fully stretched, Romario.
The goal ended India\'s hope of a final berth and representing the country at the World’s final in August.
Last year too, India lost in the semi-final in a penalty shootout.
Goa set to host Federation Cup in December ( FIRST THEY CHOSE KASHMIR )
"We have asked Goa if they are willing to host the tournament in December 2014. Unfortunately, there is now a change in plan and the Federation Cup cannot be played in May (2015) since the Indian team has international assignments and many players consider May as off-season," a senior AIFF official told TOI on Saturday.
While the dates for the Indian Super League remains unchanged — September 19 to November 30 — the next edition of the I-League will kick off only in January 2015.
The AIFF initially decided to advance the tournament to August, before the Indian Super League (ISL) kicks-off. But with several players busy with the Asian Games 2014 preparations and friendlies lined-up as well, there were fears that disadvantaged clubs like Dempo Sports Club and Sporting Clube de Goa — who have five and four players respectively at the camp — may not take the arrangement lightly.
