The two teams have played twice against each other before this match. First in the MPL Play-Off which ended in a 1-1 draw while the second match was the Independence Day Invitation Football Tournament which saw Aizawl FC as a 3-0 winner.
Reitlang FC's Coach Chawgthansanga was the Coach of Aizawl FC during the previous season where he led the team to the final of the Royal Gold Cup in Nagaland.
The two teams have a squad with clean bill of health and with every player available for selection, the coaches have all to choose from. Aizawl FC dominated the first 45 minutes right from kick-off, playing a lovely passing game. The only thing lacking was goals!
Reitlang FC have a stubborn and solid defence and they were determined not to concede any goals. They have managed to make some promising counter attacks that kept Aizawl FC defenders on their toes. Their defenders Simon and Kimkima did a good job to keep their opponents at bay
Goal scoring opportunities were far and few but the best chance in the first half fell to Aizawl FC's Captain B.Malsawmzuala (Sawmtea) whose shot was wonderfully saved by Reitlang FC's goalkeeper Benjamin Lalrinsanga. There were no goals in the first half.
Reitlang FC players were rejuvenated in the second half. Their attitude was different in the second half and dominated the game right from the start. The half time talk by the coach seemed to do wonders for them.
The second half was already an improvement from the first half. Reitlang FC have their speedy striker Lianzama to thank when his speed and movement on the flank during the counter attack resulted in a goal at 69 minutes which was beautifully taken by the substitute striker Lalruatfela, ironically a loanee from Aizawl FC!
Aizawl FC raised their game and took it to their opponents. Making meaningful substitutions paid off for them. Reitlang FC defender Simon Hmingthanzuala was given his marching order for taking down substitute Michael Lalremruata as the end of the match was approaching. Reitlang FC players and their fans might have thought they could hold on to their lead with 10 men. But it was not meant to be. Zoremtluanga came from the bench and scored the equaliser for Aizawl FC right at 90 minutes.
Just when we thought the game was ending in a draw, Aizawl FC striker Michael Lalremruata scoerd what was to be the winner in the third minute of injury time that sent the fans into ruptures. When the final whistle is blown, Aizawl FC came out as a 2-1 winner.
