    Meeting the Meiteis
With clubs coming up closer home, players from Northeast don’t need to migrate thousands of kilometers to pursue their dreams, unlike a bunch of youngsters from Manipur whom Bharat Sundaresan met a couple of years ago as they tried to carve out a life for themselves in a quiet corner of Mumbai.
IT was a balmy February afternoon in 2009 and a joyous commotion could be heard from within Flat No. 2/1, Air India Colony in Mumbai. The inhabitants of the tiny two-room kitchen house were seven Manipuri players, part of the various junior and senior teams of Air-India Football Club, and they had just realised that the chef for the day, according to the list they had drawn, was Narendra Meitei. And the striker, they knew, prepared a delectable 'Jingda fry'. They may have provided the perfect north-eastern flavour to both Air-India and Mumbai football, but the likes of Meitei, Samson Singh, Uttam Singh and the others admitted that their palettes couldn't handle the city’s spicy, oily food.

SAI, AIFF to ink deal on use of JN Stadium soccer field 40 days a year

NEW DELHI: The Sports Authority of India and the All India Football Federation are slated to ink a deal on October 5 that would allow AIFF to hold their matches on the SAI’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium football field, in lieu of a one-time investment to bring the quality of the field to the world class.

Desh Deepak Verma, Director General, SAI, told SportzPower during the course of an exclusive interview that AIFF has agreed to pay Rs 2.5 million to improve the field and make it world class, and would enjoy full access for 40 days a year, when it can host its international events here.

“AIFF would make this one time investment, and they would have the facility for 40 days a year for the next three years… the initial period is one year, extendable by two more years. AIFF has agreed to the terms and the deal will officially be signed on October 5, and this is the first time we are telling this to the media,” Verma said.

He said also that this is part of the revised CWG Legacy plan, which had initially proposed a PPP arrangement, but which did not work out as the ministry and SAI wanted to ensure that the purposes for which corporates would participate in the PPP would be sports alone.

MUMBAI: The Western India Football Association, in association with the All India Football Federation, is launching the AIFF 'D' License coaching programme, the first of its kind in the country, later this month.

WIFA has planned the first four batches in Mumbai, to be held from October 24 to 29 and would later be spread across the state by the governing body of football in Maharashtra, the association said on Sunday through a media release.

The course has been started with the vision of producing 5,000 licensed football coaches across Maharashtra in the next three years.

WIFA CEO Henry Menezes said that the aim was to make it compulsory for all schools, colleges and football clubs in the state to appoint only licensed coaches by 2013.

"We want to make it mandatory for all schools, colleges and football clubs across Maharashtra to appoint licensed coaches for all teams by the year 2013 and discussions in this regard are on with the district associations for implementation," said Menezes.

"At present, there are over 300 clubs and 900 school and college teams in Mumbai. These numbers get multiplied tenfold when we look at other football hubs across Maharashtra such as Pune, Kolhapur, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Ahmednagar, Thane, Akola, etc," he added.

"Our aim is to educate the coaches with proper coaching methods used internationally which will enable them to instill strong football fundamentals at the grassroots. This will result in a larger pool of quality players. For this, we need to have qualified and experienced coaches working with youth and children," added WIFA secretary Souter Vaz.

The 'D' license course, to be conducted by AIFF's instructors, would provide an ideal introduction to football coaching and would be open to any person over 18 years of age having football playing experience, a passion for football, an interest in coaching and the motivation to improve skills and understanding, the release added.
