KOLKATA, 18 JULY: Shillong Lajong FC are striving to build the finest football academy of India. Though a relatively new club on the horizon, Lajong's youth team players have already created a favourable impression.
As official Batli Juban Tariang told The Statesman here today, "Lajong have always taken youth development seriously," and their efforts could be seen to be bearing fruit. Lajong are sending four boys to the Bayern Munich youth academy in Germany as part of an initiative by adidas to give young footballers from India a chance to train in one of the best football facilities of the world.
The company had organised a football clinic for the youth in November 2010 at the CC&FC with the Bayern Munich All Stars. Legends of the club like Andreas Brehme, Paul Breitner, Hansi Pflugler were present. The clinic was attended by 96 young football enthusiasts, out of whom six winners - Ram Chettri, Suman Rai, Donborlang Nongkynrih, Jacob Lalrawngbawla from Shillong Lajong and local boys Sanchayan Samadder and Raju Chakraborty - were selected to be flown to the elite academy.
Though the camp lasts only 11 days, the youngsters are ready to make the most of the opportunity.
As Nongkynrih, a right-winger who idolises Nani, adds: "This could open up the doors to bigger and better things."
Another Lajong boy, Jacob Lalrawngbawla, admits that the time is short, and the chance to make a mark, rather limited, but believes that he can put it to adequate use if hard work is put in.
The two boys have had a previous experience of the big stage, having participated in the Manchester Premier Cup.
They are quick to point out the gulf in fitness, skill and accuracy that they perceived during the tourney in Manchester. As Juban Tariang adds: "Indian football needs more age-group tournaments to bolster primary-level development.
Funds and facilities are scarce." Raju Chakraborty, one of the Bengal boys, feels that the camp would be an adequate opportunity to acquire new skills and techniques from the best in the business.
Chakraborty is a student of the Ali SK Memorial Society, a facility that educates underprivileged children and also coaches football.
The difficult road that these young talents have hit is illustrated by the plight of Sanchayan Samadder, a Mohun Bagan junior player. Samadder had got an opportunity to join a football clinic in Paris but had to back out owing to visa-related problems.
He is ready to make the most of it this time around.
All the boys, aged between 14 and 16 years, dream of becoming professional footballers, possibly playing for India and even in the major leagues of the world.
