  • DEMPO OUTCLASS WILRED LEISURE 3-1

Dempo Sports Club registered a 3-1 win over Wilred Leisure in the sixth round match of the Airtel Goa Pro-League at Duler grounds, here on Tuesday.

After dropping points in their previous fixture, Dempo made amends bagging all three points. With 11 points in their kitty, Dempo now stand 4th on the points table while Wilred Leisure, who have just 1 point, are still in search of their first victory.

All the goals came in the second session of play with Nickson Castanha, Peter Carvalho and Godwin Franco getting their names on the score sheet for Dempo and substitute Jerose Oliveira making his mark by netting for Wilred.

Coach Mauricio Afonso, who marshalled the troops in the absence of head coach Arthur Papas, rested Brazilian playmaker Roberto Silva and started with Englishmen Billy Mehmet upfront and Australian Simon Colosimo in the defence.

Dempo thought created some scoring opportunities in the first half but failed to score. Their striker Nickson Castanha was proving a handful for Wilred left back Benzu Clemente with his pace and trickery.

Unsurprisingly Dempo’s first threatening move came from the left flank in the 13th minute when Nickson fired in a pinpoint cross but the robust centre forward Billy Mehmet disappointingly headed wide of the target when it looked easier to score.

Wilred’s first attempt at the goal came in the 17th minute when Bonny Niasso passed to Jason Pereira but his effort was saved by Dempo custodian Subhasish Roy Chowdhury.

Minutes later James Fernandes outsmarted Shallum Pires on the left flank but his curling effort went narrowly wide of the far post.

With nothing working for his side, stand-in coach Mauricio brought in Godwin Franco for U-20 Deryl Endro and it worked immediately, as Godwin’s inclusion brought something extra to Dempo’s lacklustre midfield.

Nickson Castanha was undoubtedly Dempo’s best player in the first half as he created number of chances for his side but the likes of Joy Ferrao, Billy Mehmet and Romeo Fernandes failed to beat the rival keeper.

After the break, Dempo seemed to play with a sense of urgency. Nickson carried his superb form into the second half, as he once again sent in a dangerous cross which found its way to Romeo but his goal bound effort was cleared off the line by Wilred captain Bruno Fernandes.

Wilred almost took the lead in the 59th minute when Agnelo Colaco fired in a low cross, which was met by Melwin Fernandes but his shot went straight into the hands of the keeper. In the very next minute Melwin returned the favour setting up Agnelo but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

In the 70th minute Wilred’s backline consisting of Bruno Fernandes, Meldon D’Silva, Bonny Niasso along with keeper Macklas Moraes, who had put in a brave performance, finally collapsed when Romeo Fernandes burst past his marker and passed to Nickson who slotted into an empty net,1-0.

Dempo doubled their lead in the 80th minute. Peter Carvalho played a quick wall pass with Billy and fired the ball into the nylons from 20-yards.

Substitution of Jerose Oliveira worked wonders forWilred as he collected a pass from Agnelo Colaco and fired into the top corner bringing his side back into the match with still four minutes to go for final hooter.

In the injury time, Godwin killed off any doubts of a comeback when he intelligently chipped the ball over the on rushing keeper making it 3-1.

Dempo could have won by a bigger margin had it not been for Wilred Leisure’s custodian Macklas Moraes who came up with a string of outstanding saves and denied Joy Ferrao on several occasions.

  • CHURCHILL BROTHERS SCORE EIGHT GOALS AGAINST MARGAO SC

I-League champions Churchill Brothers SC scored an impressive 8-0 win against Margao SC in their round seven match of the Goa Pro League at the Duler ground in Mapusa on Wednesday afternoon.

With the overcast September sky hovering over Mapusa, rain was expected at the artificial turf ground but it held back and the goals started raining withT. Bineesh Balan scoring within 11 seconds of the kick-off, while in the 9th minute he added one more to his account when he found himself at the end of a hopeful long ball from Hugo Machado. The on rushing Margao SC goalkeeper tried to head the ball as he was outside his box but he misjudged it and it fell for Bineesh who calmly slotted home.

With Margao SC unable to control the midfield the goals kept coming for Churchill Brothers and Jaison Vales scored for the Red Machines in the 13th minute when he received a pass from Alesh Sawant, rounded the goalkeeper and placed the ball inside the net. Charles Miranda scored in the 27th minute to make it 4-0 in favour of the Red Machines, Bineesh had played the ball to him. Churchill Brothers Goa went into the break with a healthy 4-0 lead.

The second half saw more goals being scored and in the 50th minute Jaison Vales got on the score-sheet again, when he placed the ball into the right hand corner of the Margao SC goal after being played through by the Red Machines Portuguese midfielder Hugo Machado. Churchill Brothers Goa coach Mariano Dias decided to take off his number one goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharya in the 54th minute and handed Lalit Thapa his first competitive game of this season.

Micky Fernandes joined the goal feast in the 68th minute when he scored after receiving a long pass from T. Bineesh Balan. Two more goals were scored by Churchill Brothers in the last quarter of the match when Bineesh Balan completed his hattrick in the 83rd minute with a calm finish past Margao goalkeeper Rahul Yadav, and Under-20 player Alesh Sawant scored a peach of a goal when he took a left-footed shot from the edge of the box which crashed into the top left corner of the Margao SC goal.

The match ended 8-0 in favour of Churchill Brothers, who are on 17 points from seven matches; while Margao suffered their seventh heavy defeat and stay pointless.
  • TUFF LAXMI PRASAD HOLD SALGAOCAR

Defending champions Salgaocar Football Club dropped two crucial points, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Tuff Laxmi Prasad in the 7th round match of the Airtel Goa Pro-League, played at Duler grounds on Thursday.

Salgaocar now have 14 points and trail table toppers Churchill Brothers by 3 points. Laxmi Prasad and Dempo are level with 11 points each.

Salgaocar coach Derrick Pereira played Scottish striker Darryl Duffy upfront and partnered him with their French acquisition Claude Gnakpa, who made his debut on Thursday.

Laxmi Prasad’s Nigerian import Godwin Uvieghara retained his spot in defence partnering with Visvino Miranda in the central defence.

Laxmi Prasad’s medio Freiman Peixoto fired an early warning shot from distance at the Salgaocar goal but the ball rolled just ayard past the goal post.

At the other end, it was debutant Claude Gnakpa who justified his inclusion in the starting eleven when he powered in a header from Gilbert Oliveira’s corner kick putting his side into lead, 1-0.

Tuff Laxmi almost came up with an immediate reply, as Medio Steven Fernandes played in a pass to Avelino Fernandes but he fired his effort wide of the target.

Laxmi Prasad earned a penalty in the 33rd minute, when Nicolao Colaco came with a clumsy tackle on Remus Gomes inside the danger zone prompting referee Melwin D’Costa to point to the dreaded spot. Steven Fernandes stepped forward to take the spot kick but he shot wide of the post much to the disbelief and frustration of their supporters.
Laxmi Prasad should have gone into the breather on level terms but they once again missed a golden opportunity to net the equaliser. Alvito Miranda wasthe culprit this time as he failed to guide his header into an empty net after Salgaocar keeper Albino Gomes failed to collect a cross from Avelino Fernandes.

The second half saw the Mapusa based side have a lion’s share of ball possession but their strikers squandered all the moves created by the midfield.

However, in the 50th minute, Laxmi Prasad did have a half chance when Avelino’s shot from distance deflected off Alvito but the ball rolled agonisingly wide of the goal.

Seven minutes later Scotsman Darryl Duffy had a brilliant opportunity to double Salgaocar’s lead. Rosario Mendes sent in a dangerous cross and Duffy managed to beat the offside trap but he fired his effort straight into the hands of keeper Reagan Juliao.

Spurred on by their supporters Laxmi Prasad went on an all out attack in search of the equaliser while Salgaocar decided to sit back and defend their slender lead.

Laxmi Prasad’s search for the equaliser finally ended in the 90th minute. Reagan Pereira, who came in as a substitute for Nerry Afonso, created space for himself and unleashed a thunderbolt from 30 yards which deceived keeper Albino Gomes and hit the back of the net sending the supporters into ruptures.

  • DEMPO GO DOWN TO SPORTING GOA 0-1

Sporting Clube de Goa pipped Dempo Sports Club 1-0 in the Airtel Goa-Pro League round seven match played at the Duler grounds, here on Saturday.

Both sides took the field accompanied by young boys carrying the official FIFA Flag and opposing captains Mathew Gonsalves and Roberto Silva swore the FIDA Fair Play oath.

It was a solitary first half strike from Joseph Pereira that earned full three points for the Flaming Orange catapulting them into 2nd place with 16 points and hot on the heels of table toppers Churchill Brothers. Dempo on the other hand stay in 4th place with 11 points.

Sporting coach Oscar Burzon stuck with Liberian striker Boima Karpeh although he had failed to find the net in their previous four fixtures, while Spanish import Arturo Garcia retained his spot in the defence.

The evening saw Japanese recruit Shinnosuke Honda making his debut in defence for Dempo and in-form striker Myron Fernandes played as a lone striker in place of Englishmen Billy Mehmet.

Sporting Clube started on a brighter note and in the 7th minute, Liberian striker Boima Karpeh had a chance to put his team ahead. Joseph Pereira passed to Boima, but the latter blasted his effort over the crossbar.

Minutes later, Boima saw his goal-bound effort blocked by defender Jessel Carneiro after collecting a pass from Cajetan Fernandes.

Dempo’s first attempt at the goal came in the 21st minute of play. Romeo Fernandes played an incisive pass to Myron Fernandes who had the goal in his sight but he was unable get the required connection and his shot was calmly collected by the keeper Ravi Kumar.

At the other end, Sporting had a brilliant opportunity to take the lead when Mauvin Borges sent in a dangerous cross which fell to unmarked Joseph Pereira, but he skied his effort to the frustration of their supporters and players.

The Flaming Orange were desperate to take the lead, where Mauvin Borges went to the ground too easily inside the danger zone forcing referee Franky Fernandes to book him for simulation.

Minutes before the half, Dempo almost conceded in uncharacteristic fashion. Keeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury spilled his collection off a cross from Jovel Martins and in a hurried attempt to clear Creson Antao kicked the ball against Joseph but the rebound which could have fallen anywhere ended up on the wrong side of the post.

However, Sporting continued to apply pressure and it paid dividends as seconds before the half time whistle defender Spanish Arturo Garcia initiated the move where he found Boima with an intelligent pass, who after doing the spade work laid it on a platter for Joseph who made no mistake with the finish, 1-0.

On crossing over Dempo went in search of the equalizer and should have done so in the 54th minute. Substitute Sameer Naik’s long ball fell to Myron who in turn flicked it into the path of Romeo Fernandes, but Sporting custodian Ravi Kumar came up with a spectacular save to deny him and keep his side in the lead.

There were hardly any chances created by either side thereafter. But there was a moment of controversy when Boima failed to abide by the Fair Play oath taken by his captain before the kickoff. With Dempo player Jessel Carneiro injured on the field Boima instead of kicking the ball out of play and allowing medical attention for the injured player carried on, dribbled past the keeper but ultimately shot wide, instigating a heated argument between the two sides. Dempo keeper Subhasish Chowdhury almost man handled Boima Karpeh, however the referee and the players managed to separate them.

With only three substitutes on the bench and defender Creson Antao off the pitch injured, Dempo interim coach Mauricio Afonso was short of options and had to play with 10 men for 5 minutes and eventually brought on U-20 Clencio Pinto.
