  • WILRED LEISURE SECURE FIRST WIN

Wilred Leisure SC finally tasted their first win in the ongoing Airtel Goa Pro-League after registering a hard-fought 2-1 win over St Cruz SC Cavelossim in the 7th round match, at Duler grounds here on Sunday.

With the win Wilred Leisure have now four points, while Cavelossim have eight points.
Wilred scored a goal in each session of play through Sertorio Monteiro (11th min) and Bonny Niasso (84th min). Cavelossim managed to reduce the margin through Prestley Colaco in the 88th minute.

Before the kick-off both teams came on to the pitch accompanied by the bright yellow Flag of FIFA highlighting the words “My Game is Fair Play” and Captain of SCC Cavelossim Jason D’Mello and Bruno Fernandes of Sesa Football Academy swore the FIFA Fair Play oath.

A sizeable crowd from both the teams travelled all the way from Salcete to cheer their teams who were playing with their full Goan squads.

Cavelossim coach Khanan Priolkar started with Wilton Gomes and Inacio Colaco in the central midfield, who kept their strikers Jolex Fernandes and Prestley Colaco busy upfront.

For Wilred Leisure coach Savio Vaz partnered Jerose Oliveira and Sertorio Monteiro, who kept the rival defence on their toes.

Cavelossim had the first attempt at the rival goal in the 10th minute but Prestley Colaco was a second late to connect Wilton Gomes free kick.

Fifteen minutes into the match and Wilred Leisure caught the Cavelossim defence on the wrong foot, as a pinpoint cross by Agnelo Colaco was coolly nodded into the goal by Sertorio Monteiro, 1-0.

Two more chances went abegging for Cavelossim as Marcus Fernandes failed to keep his efforts inside the goal framework, while Jolex Fernandes shot on the run sailed inches over the crosspiece.

A minute before the breather and Wilred should have doubled their lead from a fine built up move between Sertorio Monteiro and Jerose Oliveira but the latter shot was plucked by keeper Jason D’Mello at the first post.

Cavelossim were a transformed unit on crossing over and came with two threatening moves.

In the very 3rd minute Jolex Fernandes grounder was pushed for a corner by keeper Macklas Moraes and ten minutes later Wilton Gomes corner was connected by Prestley Colaco into the goal for the equaliser. But assistant referee Ian Rodrigues pulled his flag up instructing the referee that the ball had come inside the field from outside much to the dismay of the players and large supporters.

Wilton Gomes got him a caution card from referee Levino Pereira for showing dissent.

At the other end, substitute Melwin Fernandes and Agnelo Colaco combined superbly from the centre of the field but keeper Jason D’Mello brilliantly positioned himself to pair Melwin’s venomous shot from inside the penalty box.

In the last ten minutes of the match two goals were scored. Keeper Jason blocked Wilred’s Bonny Niasso close quarter shot, while Agnelo Colaco tapped the ball over the crossbar from inside the 6-yard box off a deadly cross by Melwin.

Finally Wilred netted their second goal as Bonny Niasso got hold to a loose ball, covered some ground and beat the onrushing Cavelossim keeper with a neat placement, 2-0.

Cavelossim goal came a bit too late. In the 88th minute Prestley Colaco made no mistake to nod the ball into the goal from a perfect cross by Godfrey Rodrigues, 2-1.
  • MARGAO SC’S WILFRED RARING TO STRIKE AGAIN

In sports every player goes through a lean patch irrespective of which game he or she plays and there comes a time in everyone’s career when nothing seems to go their way. Wilfred Gomes,
the highly talented striker of Margao SC is going through a similar phase, as even after playing as many as seven matches in the Goa Professional League so far the otherwise prolific striker has failed to find the mark on single occasion.

Wilfred’s prolonged slump in form has ultimately reflected in his team’s poor performance, as it has so far failed to register a single victory and is yet to open its account in the league.

Margao SC will be playing their next match against Goa Velha on September 13 and his team-mates and supporters must be hoping that Wilfred gets back to his goal scoring habits and gives his team the much needed points.

The 29-year-old striker, who possesses all the necessary skills and shooting power to take on any defence line, has also exuded confidence to strike again as he says that he is all charged up and determined to score in the next match.

“I can use both my legs and can function well on both the flanks,’” said Wilfred when asked what gives him the confidence that he would score in the next match. Elaborating on his strong will power, the presently out-of-form but highly confident striker said, “It does not matter who my opponents and how strong they are, it is my intuition that prompts me to say that a goal would be coming soon.” He however soon added that if not in the match against Goa Velha then in the next match against Wilred Leisure, the goal is bound to come from his boots.

Wilfred, who hails from Raiture village and plays for Raia SC in the inter-village tournament, is a national player and has represented Goa in the 2011 football nationals.

He also played for Goa under-21 team in two nationals — once in 2002 when Goa emerged winners against Karnataka and the other time when they eventually lost to Bengal in Kolkata.

He has also played for teams like Salcete FC, Cabral SC, Vasco Club and MPT. He was the regular in his school team St Thereza’s Convent HS, Raia for Subroto Cup, and was very much admired by his schoolmates for his footballing skills.

Wilfred loves to improve his game and is always willing to learn more from the coaches and other players. And this very quality of him is admired by his club officials both at the inter-village level as well as by his professional side Margao SC.

Barcelonas’ Argentine striker Lionel Messi happens to be Wilfred’s idol and he hopes to emulate his hero’s antics in the next Professional League match against Goa Velha.

  • SALGAOCAR, CAVELOSSIM IN DULL DRAW

Defending champions Salgaocar Football Club were held to a goalless draw by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim in the Airtel Goa Pro-league match, played at Duler grounds, here on Wednesday.

Salgaocar suffered a major blow to climb higher in the league table as they dropped two crucial points and have 16 points after eight matches while Cavelossim are with 9 points.

Salgaocar coach Derrick Pereira kept his faith on his French acquisition Claude Gnakpa and played him as a lone striker while Lenny Pereira was played in place of Nigerian Chika Wale in defence. Cavelossim defence was bolstered with the return of injured centre back Mohamed Ali.

The Green Brigade could have taken the lead seconds after the kick-off as Claude Gnakpa flicked on a header into the path of Karma Tsewang, but he failed to apply the finishing touch and his lob was collected by Cavelossim keeper Jason.

The credibility of the medical assistance provided by the GFA was questioned when in the 5th minute of play Cavelossim keeper Jason D’Mello fell to the ground unconscious after an off the ball tackle from Salgaocar’s Claude Gnakpa. Frantic calls from the announcer and match officials went in vain as the on-field medic Dr Jawaharlal Henriques could not be found in the premises, forcing referee Parmananda Mandrekar to stop play for more than five minutes. However, thanks to the swift action of the Salgaocar medical team, led by physio Dilip Kumar, the injured player regained consciousness and went on to play the full 90 minutes much to the relief of the concerned supporters and players.

In the 15th minute Jason D’Mello’s attempt to thwart the ball off the feet of Claude resulted in referee Parmananda pointing to the dreaded spot. But keeper Jason redeemed himself with a brilliant save from Claude’s overconfident penalty.

Cavelossim came close to scoring in the 36th minute when Fredric Endro slipped in a ball to Prestley Colaco but his stiff grounder went wide of the target.

Salgaocar could have taken the lead minutes before the breather. A long pass from the defence was perfectly chested down by Claude setting up substitute Bali Gagandeep but his blazing effort whistled just inches wide of the post.

On crossing over Salgaocar carried their momentum and had a lion’s share of ball possession and kept their strikers busy upfront.

Unable to penetrate the Cavelossim defence Salgaocar resorted to shooting from distance and it almost paid dividends when Claude dribbled past two defenders and shot from 25 yards, but Jason D’Mello parried his effort for a corner.

Salgaocar came close to breaking the deadlock in the 71st minute when Gilbert Oliveira drove through the Cavelossim defence and passed to Bali, whose shot was pushed to safety by keeper Jason with a fantastic low diving save.

Substitute Marcus Mascarenhas could have had an immediate impact on the proceedings after he collected a through ball from fellow substitute Rosario Mendes but his chipped effort went agonisingly wide of the target to the dismay of the players and supporters.

In the last 15 minutes Salgaocar had to play with 10 men as midfielder Clifton Dias picked up his second yellow after a clumsy tackle on Richard Colaco.

Even with a man down Salgaocar kept up the pressure and went all out to secure a win, but Cavelossim last line of defence held by Valentino D’Silva, Muhammad Ali, Plecio Carvalho and Elvino Fernandes, along with keeper Jason D’Mello, failed to budge under pressure to snatch a point from their opponents.
  • GOA VELHA RALLY TO BEAT MARGAO

Goa Velha Sports Club came from two goals down to beat Margao Sports Club 3-2 in the 8th round match of the Airtel Goa Pro-League at Duler grounds, here on Friday.

Stunned by two early goals, Goa Velha first managed to pull one before the break through Blake Haldankar and then in the second session scored two more goals through substitute Roydon Camelo and Manuel Crasto.

Earlier, Margao surprised their opponents taking 2-0 lead in the first half through Frehauf Fernandes and Damodar Harigan.

With Friday’s victory Goa Velha climbed to 7th place with 10 points while Margao SC, having lost all their matches so far, remain without a point.

Goa Velha’s first threatening move came in the 20th minute when medio Manuel Crasto found Joe Colaco with an incisive pass but the latter failed to beat keeper Gurdev Singh in one to one situation.

Minutes later, Rauf Khan passed the ball to Valencio Estrocio, who did everything right but failed to pull the trigger and gave defender Agnelo Barreto time to make the timely tackle.

However, in the 28th minute, Margao stunned their opponents by taking the lead. It was Rauf Khan again who was involved in the build-up move, as he set up Frehauf Fernandes to put the ball into the net, 1-0.

Three minutes later Margao shocked everyone by taking an unlikely two-goal lead. Seeing the keeper Dietmar Fernandes off his line Damodar Harigan found the net in a spectacular fashion with a 35-yard strike, 2-0.

A stunned Goa Velha got their act together and pulled one back in the 41st minute. Nester Dias crossed to Joe Colaco but he miss-timed his shot and the ball fell to Atish Madkaikar who in turn passed it to Blake Haldankar, who made no mistake with the finish, 2-1.

Crossing over, Goa Velha looked a rejuvenated side as they tormented the Margao backline with attack after attack.

Joe Colaco could have netted the equaliser but he was denied by Margao custodian Gurdev Singh, as he thwarted the ball off Joe’s feet with a neat sliding tackle.

At the other end, Margao should have extended their lead when Janifar Clemente was gifted an opportunity following a defensive blunder from Jeremy Menezes, but he headed the ball straight into the hands of the keeper.

Under relentless pressure from Goa Velha, Margao citadel collapsed in the 75th minute. Substitute Roydon Camelo smashed in the equaliser after a goalmouth melee, 2-2.

In the very next minute Margao could have once again taken the lead when Valencio Estrocio struck a venomous 25-yard drive but his effort was acrobatically pushed to safety by keeper Dietmar Fernandes.

At the other end, substitute Alber Gonsalves flashed the ball across the goal but Wellington Fernandes headed wide from handshaking distance.

Goa Velha broke the hearts of Margao supporters and players as well when in the 85th minute Alber sent a cross to Manuel Crasto, who fired the winner to deny a precious first point to their opponents.
  • DEMPO CLINCH 5-GOAL THRILLER

Dempo Sports Club emerged victorious against Salgaocar Football Club defeating them by 3-2 margin in the 8th round match of the ongoing Airtel Goa Pro-League, at Duler grounds here on Saturday.

It was a thrilling contest which kept supporters of both the sides on the edge of their seats till the final whistle. Australian Simon Colosimo netted his first goal of the campaign while Joy Ferrao and Myron Fernandes scored a goal apiece. Myron is now Dempo’s top-scorer in the league with 4 goals to his credit so far. Scotsman Darryl Duffy also opened his personal account as he netted a brace for Salgaocar.

After this victory Dempo are fourth in the standings with 14 points while Salgaocar stay in third place with15 points.

Dempo coach Mauricio Afonso played both his foreign imports Australian Simon Colosimo and Japanese Shinnosuke Honda as central defenders with Sameer Naik and Debabrata Roy as wing backs.

Salgaocar coach Derrick Pereira played Scottish acquisition Darryl Duffy along with Bali Gagandeep upfront while Agustin Fernandes and Leny Pereira marshaled the defence.

The Green Brigade threatened to open the scoring early on when the Scotsman Darryl Duffy picked up a loose ball at the edge of the box and unleashed a fierce low drive which beat the keeper but crashed against the side post.

However, in the 26th minute, Salgaocar stunned their opponents by taking the lead against the run of play. A quick counter attacking move saw Aslon Oliveira pass to the overlapping right back Nicolao Colaco who in turn sent in a dangerous low cross where Duffy finished the move with a deft touch putting his side into the lead, 1-0.

The Azuri looked rattled after conceding but regained their composure and dominated the proceedings thereafter.

Dempo found the equalizer in the 33rd minute through the boots of the Australian. A short corner from Joy Ferrao to Nickson Castanha saw the latter send in an inviting cross and Simon Colosimo replied with a clinical finish to restore parity.

With the momentum on their side, Dempo took the lead two minutes later when Joy Ferrao nodded home medio Jewel Shaikh’s set-piece delivery from close range.

On crossing over Dempo continued to play with confidence and pressed forward looking to extend their lead. Hardly two minutes into the second half and Myron Fernandes took advantage of a goalmouth melee to fire the ball into the nylons to make it 3-1.

Minutes later, Myron could have netted his brace and killed the match for their opponents, but his goal-bound header from Joy Ferrao’s pin-point cross came back off the crossbar.

At the other end, Duffy scored his brace in the 61st minute for Salgaocar as he netted in similar fashion as his first goal from substitute Karma Tsewang’s low cross, to get back his team into the match.

Spurred by their supporters, the Green brigade went all out in search of the equalizer and tormented Dempo’s backline with attack after attack. Captain Rocus Lamare was leading the charge as he stung the hands of Dempo custodian Subhasish Roy Chowdhury with two rasping efforts from distance.

The Azuri however defended exceptionally, well under relentless pressure and held on to their slender lead to secure all three points.

Bloody hell. I won't even complain here as I have seen the line-ups from the I-League sides.... just wow... the dominance.
  • SPORTING CLUBE DE GOA HIT FOUR AGAINST CAVELOSSIM

Sporting Goa led 1-0 at the breather thanks to a Deepak Devrani header.

Dawson Fernandes was in the lineup after completing his national duty with the India team recently.

Sporting Goa custodian Melroy Fernandes was the hero after saving a penalty at a crucial point in the second half and also denying former Sporting Goa legend Wilton Gomes on two separate occasions.

Sporting Goa raced into the lead after just 13 minutes when Deepak Devrani headed in unmarked at the back post from a Dawson corner.

Ten minutes into the second session, Pratesh laid the ball off for Jerry who applied a deft finish to place home.

Cavelossim’s answer was immediate, as Agnelo D’souza managed to catch the Sporting Goa goalkeeper off guard with a delightful shot to pull a goal back.

This spurred Cavelossim on and two minutes later they were awarded a dubious penalty after the ball was adjudged to have been handled by Keenan Almeida.

Up stepped Prestly Colaco for Cavelossim but his thunderous effort was palmed away to safety by Sporting Goa’s Melroy.

The Flaming Oranje started to build up momentum again and was rewarded for their efforts when Jerry slotted home his tenth goal of the season.

Deep into injury time substitute Stephene Barretto captilised after a mistake at the back to seal victory for Sporting Goa.

Sporting Goa has now collected 19 points from eight matches and is just a point behind leaders Churchill Brothers.
