Atlético Madrid Kolkata, the recently formed Indian Super League franchise club, will be the next destination for midfielder Borja Fernández, after he opts for a first move overseas in his career.
Following a career that began with his formative years at Real Madrid, which included first-team appearances between 2003 and 2005, Borja Fernández has played for Mallorca, Real Valladolid and Getafe in two spells either side of a season with Deportivo La Coruña.
33-year-old midfielder Borja has now announced via his Twitter account (@BorjaFF), that he’s opted for a new and different adventure in his footballing career, having announced that he’ll be moving to the newly founded Indian Super League, where he’ll join West Bengal based franchise club, Atlético Madrid Kolkata, who are partly owned by their Spanish counterparts and La Liga champions.
“After 13 years in Spain, I’ve decided to take a break and experience an adventure abroad… Indian Super League: Atlético Madrid Kolkata.”
“Thanks to the teams who tempted me to have another season in Spain, but I may not have this opportunity again.”
The newly formed Indian Super League will see eight franchise teams in different cities, compete in the first season of competition. Borja has agreed to join what currently is regarded the most costly of those franchises, Atlético Madrid Kolkata, who were established in May 2014 and who will play at the 120,000 capacity Salt Lake Stadium, which is the largest in India and the second largest of its kind in the world.
Part of the formation of this new league in India, along with the franchise rights for each club when they were sold, was intended to ensure that each bidder guarantees a significant investment in grass roots football locally.
