Churchill Brothers are set to sign Croatian coach Drago Mamic club officials confirmed today. However, he isn't expected to take over till after their next match against Viva Kerala in Kannur on Sunday.
The 57-year-old is a highly rated coach with his most recent stint being with the Myanmar National team last year. He has also held top jobs in Croatian first division, Chinese second division and in Malaysia with Sabah FC.
The Goan side was without a coach last week as Singaporean coach Vincent Subramaniam resigned from his post following disagreements with club management over team issues. However, playing without a coach the team managed to comfortably see off Mumbai FC 3-1 with the usual suspects Odafe Okolie and Kayne Vincent hitting the target, yesterday.
Confirming the development manager Macario Rodrigues said, “Yes the coach is arriving on Saturday and we will be signing him soon. He has been an experienced coach and we hope that he helps us achieving our goals.”
Although he didn’t confirm that Mamic will be on bench when Churchill Brothers take on Viva Kerala in Kannur on Sunday. “We need to sign him first. That is the later thing,” Macario added.
Currently Churchill is in second position in the I-league four points adrift of their cross town rivals Salgaocar. But have been in good form lately with the most expensive player of the I-League Odafe and Kiwi recruit Vincent in swashbuckling form.
It will be interesting to see how the new coach handles the team on such a short notice as nothing less than the title will be the target for both the club and the coach.
Ambani prioritises grassroots soccer development in IMG-R, AIFF meet
NEW DELHI: The first interactive meeting between IMG Reliance and All India Football Federation, after the deal was signed last December, went off well, with Mukesh Ambani present throughout and the issues of popularizing soccer and a developmental programme took centrestage.
The meeting, held on March 19, discussed the lack of infrastructure “both for practice and for national level games was discussed, and Ambani was informed of the steps taken by AIFF so far, a senior AIFF official informed SportzPower.
Earlier in an interview, Kushal Das, secretary general of the Federation had told SportzPower that it had done a recce of all the football stadiums available that could be upgraded and what needs to be done to upgrade them.
Three stadiums in Calcutta, those already in lease to East Bengal and Mohan Bagan clubs, as well another one called Rabindra Sarovar, one stadium in Bangalore and one in Goa have been identified so far.
Ambani insisted, sources said, that grassroots efforts have to be intensified for soccer development, and state level football needs to be given priority.
The IMG made a presentation on its plans so far, which brought out some startling statistics.
“The IMG showed that there are 21 million footballers in the country, the third highest in the world. But this potential is also the difficulty, of how to reach out to so many spread over so vast a land,” the official said, adding that these aspects are being worked on.
But ‘popularising football would mean getting the national team to do well, as also improving the profile of I’League, as had been prioritized by AIFF. So were any timelines set out?
No timelines were discussed. “That is difficult for the moment,” the official said.
“This was an essentially interactive meeting and it went off to a very positive conclusion,” he added
