The only problem is mismanagement. Only few people are responsible for that. Also the footballing culture in Kolkata maidan, the pressure for winning trophies, problem of payment from sponsors all played a part. Still after so many hurdles they are going strong.
Mohun Bagan and East Bengal story is indeed an example of "Legacy without success"...
.
Such a long history these two clubs possess...their crazy fan-following...
But NO WORLD-CLASS INFRASTRUCTURE,STILL BOTH THESE CLUBS(MOHUN BAGAN ESPECIALLY) FINANCIALLY POOR,ATLEAST EITHER OF THESE CLUBS SHOULD HAVE REGULARLY COMPETED IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE...*sigh*...And where is the success?Winning National Championships?Never.
I FEEL SAD WHEN I SEE EVERY YEAR THEY BUY THE SAME JUNK FOREIGNERS...THESE TWO CLUBS ARE THEMSELVES RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR SORRY STATE...THEY HAVE RUN WITH SUCH UNPROFESSIONALISM...
When the sport in the nation is in a downward spiral you can't expect two clubs to compete in the AFC Champions League. Similarly top Asian clubs will eat humble pie when playing against top European clubs. What EB has achieved is admirable despite no government or Federation support of the sport whatsoever. Can we do more? Ofcourse, but you can't clap with one hand.
I agree that the 'success' level we are thinking when we discuss the two iconic clubs should be playing in ACL on a regular basis. In reality, MB got heavily drubbed by an upstart (well, in comparison to them) Chinese club in ACL play off, and EB didn't reach there at all. That's it.
Winning I-league, Fed Cup are not at all markers for success for these two, at least. May be for BFC, as they are a new club. Not even AFC Cup appearances are enough. This is if we want to see them at the level where clubs like Persepolis, Pohang Steelers, Pakhtakor or Gamba Osaka are operating. And let us not mention the names of Man U, Arsenal or Chelsea in the same breath -- as is the norm with Kolkata press -- to inflate the collective ego of ourselves.
And also, let us not raise the subject of club infra. We aren't anywhere near a random AFC level club even. We failed big time. Period.
Only history, rabid fans and internal successes do not make an iconic club.

Bro...the two clubs we are talking about are no ordinary clubs...
These two clubs have had faithful fans...
The clubs never faced any downfall in terms of support...
The management of the clubs have failed to build up on this support...
But you can't improve in an environment where the mother body ( read aiff ) has no visionary for the upliftment of the game, they can't even organise a full fledged league and cup.
