We have probably improved minimally, in all likelihood stagnated, but everybody around us have made progress by leaps and bounds.
Thai players play regularly in J League. Vietnam has developed. Syria, Jordan are above us, 'Stan's beating us consistently in spite of all chest thumping by us. Waiting for Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong to overtake us ...
We hail mediocrity as if they are world class. We do have a stupid coach in charge. We select our worst from a list of probables (barring few of course sunil udanta , GSS, and few others ). Coach has got no modern strategy to play competitive football. He is outdated. We have a weird two league dilemma to solve. What can we expect from this. If our selections are based on merit, and we have a good energetic modern coaching strategy, we can do much better. We certainly have that potential. But not using the resources properly. We are a sleeping giant who is taking sleeping pills regularly and as a routine.
@ friends my thoughts on our team, league and transition to senior level..
definitely we have improved when compared to 2011.. we have good players to play in each position for senior NT... even our junior players are technically superior....as footydip said, it is just that stupid selection which is killing NT... not sure if our coach & selectors watches I league and ISL..
however it is not a drastic improvement.. while teams like Syria, Thailand & Vietnam improved by heaps and bounds.. ours is not comparable with those teams...
the transition from junior level to senior team is not good.. the U-16 & U-19 players are not molded properly baring few players representing Asian junior level tournaments... also after pro, most of the young players warming the benches.. to avoid this, we need to have proper league structure with divisions so that young players can be loaned to lower divisions...
Top tier should last for 7 to 8 months so that players will be in good shape and form for entire year... this is possible only after merger.. also youth league should be in proper format...
I fail to understand how Syria, Iraq and other west Asian teams improve so much when their country is totally war torn while India with its mediocrity fail to improve. Maybe drastic conditions does help making an individual sterner and more focussed. We constantly speak about infrastructure but how much infra does these countries have? probably reason why our players do not fare up well.
Iraq is always good... countries like Saudi & Iran has football culture... Most of the West Asian countries invests a lot in youth football... also not all gulf countries are at war...
coming to Syria... Syrian NT players play in top leagues..countries like Saudi, Iran, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq... Due to current situation, most of them are playing foreign leagues... even in Oman, Jordan... Syrian youth players will be most impacted players due to war...
If we consider investment, we do spend a lot but for undeserving players. Myopic vision of our clubs is a hindrance here. We should be spending those money purchasing grounds, hiring qualified coaches, proper training facilities. But they are happy with a 4/5/6 crore priced old slow foreign guy. Or spending crore for a undeserving Indian players.
Our expenditure is done on wrong things. Opening ceremony for ISL, unwanted fees for so called celebrities, overpriced Indian player wages and some shitty foreign recruits.
Money should actually be spent on good youth tournaments(year long competition), building good youth teams(exposure, good scouting), educating coaches etc. Finally the most important thing is to get rid of this 2 competitions running for just 4-5 months.
