India awaits its World Cup pre- qualifier destiny The Indian national team have benefited from a crucial rankings rise in Asia and sit in Pot 3, as the same draw will be used for qualification to the 2019 Asian Cup... Nikhil Jitendran 13-Apr-2015 06:06:25 The Indian national team will have many an Indian football fan on tenterhooks, even without kicking a ball on Tuesday, 14th April. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will hold its draw for round two of pre-qualifiers for 40 nations from Asia, for the 2018 World Cup, which will be held in Russia. The event holds particular significance as the resulting draw will be used in the main qualification process of the AFC Asian Cup 2019, for the very first time. The teams that will be taking part in the draw have been segregated into five pots based on their Asian ranking, which is updated as per the rankings of teams in the FIFA rankings list, the latest of which was released on Thursday, 9th April, 2015. India’s excellent win over Nepal, over two a two legged affair in the first round of qualifications in March, has seen them rise to rank 147 in the official FIFA rankings. This marks a significant rise for the Blue Tigers , who had fallen to a historical low of 173, just over two months ago. Now, their all important rise in the FIFA rankings has seen the Indian national team climb from the fringes of the AFC ranking, 35th, to solidify their place in table where they currently sit on rank 23, a twelve place rise. The pots for the draw itself will see the 40 teams sectioned into five pots of eight teams each. The draw will see each a representative in each pot, as the teams will be eventually drawn into five groups. Pot 1 (Teams ranked 1st to 8th): Iran, Japan, Korea Republic, Australia, UAE, Uzbekistan, China, Iraq Pot 2 (Teams ranked 9th to 16th): Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain, Vietnam, Syria and Kuwait Pot 3 (Teams ranked 17th to 24th): Afghanistan, Philippines, Palestine, Maldives, Thailand, Tajikistan, Lebanon and India Pot 4 (Teams ranked 25th to 32nd): Timor-Leste, Kyrgyzstan, DPR Korea, Myanmar, Turkmenistan, Indonesia, Singapore and Bhutan Pot 5 (Teams ranked 33rd to 40th): Malaysia, Hong Kong, Bangladesh, Yemen, Guam, Laos, Cambodia and Chinese Taipei As per the table, India sit pretty in Pot 3 of the draw. No team from the same pot will face each other in the qualification process. The teams drawn into the groups will play each other in double round robin format beginning 11th June, 2015 and concluding on 29th March, 2016. The Group winners and FOUR best runners-up will have a joint incentive - the 12 teams will not only qualify for the final qualification round of the 2018 World Cup, but they will also be automatically inducted as the qualifying teams, partaking in the AFC Asian Cup, hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in 2019. For the remaining 12 slots in the 24 team Asian Cup, the ‘next best’ 24 teams will slog it out amongst each other, in a separate qualification process.
