Jason, almost all the Athletes who were mentioned by me and others have already won the Medals in past Olympics,World Championships and Grandslams in case of Tennis. So,certainly they were good enough but India as whole have failed to deliver at crucial moments. It has happened in past with other countries also but the extent to which it has happened is not tolerable.

We have had 3,4th places so far.Just imagine those who are finishing 4th could have finished 3rd also.So had those been 3 medals with potentially Wrestling coming and all of the sudden we were in decent place. So,they are certainly capable but have underperformed drastically.

In World Championship Athletics 2015, USA was as always the favourite. However they underperformed drastically and came 2nd followed by Kenya.

In some events we have underperformed drastically, however in some events we have choked at crucial times.

I feel this choke is temporary and will provide better bresults in Future Olympics.

  • It is simply a numbers game, those who deliver in the past can't always maintain form 4 years later. We don't have close to the  amount of quality athletes in different discplines as the countries we want to compete with. Look how many archers S Korea have that could have won a medal in Archery? How many gymnists did japan have that could medal in swimming or gymnastics? Iran in wrestling? China in just about everything...

We barely missed out in mixed doubles tennis but the US had 2 teams in the top 4 and any number that could have made the olympics. How can anyone say we have enough athletes of world standard to dream of consistently winning in anything other than cricket? We have a fraction in a huge population.

We must look at the real root causes and not symptom even though they are painful to admit. It is okay to examine why our culture/diet has killed sports in india and the rest of south asia. We should spend less time banning banning beef/pork and worshipping cricket idols. If anything, we should ban samosas and other crap and start mandating religious visits gymnasiums. For the sake of health and bot only sports. It is extremely difficult and expensive to replicate the amino acid chains of animal derived protein as a vegetarian. You would need to mix pea protein powder with rice protein powder to get close. I don't think they have many Whole Foods stores in india though ;)

Jason, you are correct with regards to examples which you have given. However Comparison with respect to Korea,Japan etc is in reality a no comparison. We are a developing country both economically and Sports wise.Comparison with a country which finishes in and around top 10 at Olympics is slightly overboard.

We have only managed one individual Gold ever.Korea generally takes around 10-15 Golds.

You,are right w.r.t to your explanations.I feel the stage at which we are we should focus on getting Double Digit Medals and increasing our Gold tally.

The best which we have managed in recent times is 50th rank.We should focus to secure certain medals in the events where we already have a decent quality i.e Shooting,Wrestling, Badminton,Boxing etc and try to guarantee a certain sum of medals, then perhaps spread across over other sports.

Stiff competition between Srikanth and Jorgensen; Srikanth won the first game 21-19 but is trailing in the second game. Renjith Maheshwary and Sraboni Nanda bow out.

Kidambi Srikanth qualifies for the quarter-finals of Men's singles badminton with a 21-19 21-12 win in the Round of 16 match. Not a good beginning for our wrestlers: Ravinder Khatri is out of Rio Olympics after being thumped 9-0 by his Hungarian opponent in the Round of 16 match. :s

srabani Nanda, Renjith Maheswary  were embarassment at this level.
