India are to take on Oman at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru in their opening group D fixture of the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup qualification. The Blue Tigers ' star striker, Sunil Chhetri who was announced as the vice-captain of the side said that the entire team was optimistic regarding the challenge. "Everybody is optimistic. There are a lot of players in our team who haven't played a match of this magnitude. A lot of players are new. We are more worried about how we are training than how we will play. So that should work in our advantage," the 30 year-old striker remarked. The forward, who has been capped 77 times for the nation said that India needed to build a team where the goal would be to have a stable eleven for the next five years, and only then would the results come in. "What I would like, is a team that stays together for a longer time. In my career for the national team, whenever I can look back, whenever we got the result and have done better is when we had the proper 11- to-14 players. Of course, you need the 18-to-23 players, but if a gaffer can't find the 11-to-14 players that he needs, it's a problem. This is just the start. I hope that the players who are there in the camp makes the gaffer's job more difficult to bring more players to stay here. Then we can build up a team where we can see the same players for the next five years. Then we can get results," said the player who first turned out for India way back in 2005. The Bengaluru FC player also added that internationally all over, teams which have stuck together have always done well. "It's not going to be easy if you're a coach and every time you see a new right-back or a left-back or a striker. Then the probability to get results won't be high. If you see the teams, club-wise or country-wise, who have done well are the teams who have been together for a longer time," he opined. Chhetri, who had plied his trade with Kansas City Wizards and Sporting's 'B' side said that football in India was on the rise and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) had a vital role in that. "This is one of the reasons why the level of football is going up in India. I don't want to sound biased, but the AIFF has done tremendously well in the last two years in terms of players, management, the support and everything," he signed off.
