Khelo India Games cannot be a substitute for National Games. Khelo is only for U-17 and U-21 age group.and mostly amateur sportspeople .. Where will people outside that age group go without competition ?
By neglecting adequate senior level competitons like National Games and focusing only on a small pool of Khelo youngsters, the pool of sportspeople becomes narrower and narrower by the time they reach senior level.
People aren't talking swimming but I feel we have made inroads in swimming with two Swimmers qualifying via "A standard". Winning medals is essential if we are to do well in Olympics. The first step will be to win medals at Asian and Commonwealth Games. It will take time but I can see is doing well in 3-4 Olympics w.r.t Swimming.

A friend's daughter is representing Telangana in the junior nationals. He compared the times from her metes to US national records. He found that Indian records were competitive with US kids (or close behind) until about 6th standard but the gap starts to increase thereafter and by high school Indians are far behind. He had thought she was doing well because she was improving her performance relative to her peers in India, but he found that in reality she was falling behind compared to her peers in the US. This is an issue of both lack of competition (more kids need to swim for higher competition), and lack of training facilities (so that we get the best out of the swimmers we have).
