ATK may not be the prime club in Kolkata, but FC Goa is the prime club in Goa at present, However despite this the Owners (Casino kings) are looking to sell stake with the miserable performance of the club. To add to this the coach has openly blamed the management for lack of budget , Also the CM of Goa who is close to the casino lobby may change, thereby making things tough for the casino lobby and the club to get freebies.
To think of being the prime club of a state, FCG is the only Goan club in IL, ISL and IL II, save for Churchill Bros ( who are in IL by a court order i think). After the advent of ISL, the destruction of Goan football is near complete.
There are a couple of Goan players plying their trade in Kolkata, but that doesn't mean Goan football is thriving.
If you don't have a team from your state, your young footballers and fans don't have anything to look uo to. Football doesn't survive in that scenario.
Football in a state is thriving when the following factors are in play:
1) The local professional team is providing quality training and infrastructure for youth.
2) There is an organized pro/semi-pro state league.
3) Many leagues and tournaments.
IMO, Goan football is thriving. Arguably the best state league in India but the opportunity for Goan players in the national league has suffered a bit in recent years.
I would blame ISL (single club in place of multple clubs from the state), and the big disservice handed out to the state by the big clubs Dempo and Salgaocar, aming other reasons.
Three investors will pull out of the ISL at the end of this season.
The AFC is putting massive pressure on AIFF to resolve the issue of the two League's in India.
