Asian Games 2018: Sports Ministry asks IOA to reassess contingent for event
There may be hope for a number of Indian athletes to make the cut for the Asian Games 2018 that kick off next month, with the Sports Ministry requesting the Indian Olympic Association to reassess the contingent that it had announced earlier this month.
The controversy surrounding the Indian Olympic Association and the nation's contingent for the upcoming Asian Games 2018 has taken another turn, with the Sports Ministry asking the IOA to reassess the contingent that will be sent to Indonesia for the quadrennial event. Earlier this month, the body had announced a 524-member contingent for the Asiad but it could now be changed after the Ministry's request.
Sources have confirmed to Times Now that the Ministry has sent an official communication to the IOA, asking them to reassess the contingent. It has suggested that athletes should be included or excluded based on their performances in the last six months as well.
This would be a major boost to the hopes of a number of teams and athletes who were excluded from the 524-member list announced earlier. It includes the national football teams (men's and women's) as well, which were dropped from the contingent as they failed to meet the criteria set by the IOA.
The football teams were also deemed to be 'incompetent' by the Olympic body, with officials stating that they had no hopes of winning any medals. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) tried on a number of occasions to make a case for the teams' inclusion but in the end, they were left stranded and even termed the IOA's call as 'myopic'.
However, with this latest development, it is still unclear whether the Indian football teams can still become part of the competition in Indonesia. The draws for both the men's and women's sections have been made and even if the IOA does reconsider its decision, it is uncertain whether India can be reinstated.
At the event, 24 teams will take part in the men's football tournament while the women's event will have only 11 nations. The competition will be an U-23 level tournament, with each nation country allowed to field a maximum of three overage players.
Some new addtions to the Indian squad while some have been removed.
Bridge and Climbing have been added while 20 players of Pencak Silat have been dropped citing fake credentials.
This is alarming and hilarious. They were firm on not sending Football. But they were sending Pencak Silat team (unknown sport) in initial list which has now turned out to be fake players !!!
What research did they do earlier that they were medal hopefuls ??
