IOA forms panel to pick gymnastics team for Asian Games
The Indian Olympic Association set up a five-member selection panel to pick the gymnastics team for the upcoming Asian Games while also giving clearance to the men's squads of football and handball.
The IOA also took the decision not to send India's equestrian team in the Asian Games after a controversy erupted in the selection of the squad.
Mausam Khatri, Pawan Kumar book place in Asian Games 2018 wrestling squad
Mausam Khatri, bronze medallist at the 2010 Asian Games, and Pawan Kumar booked their places in India’s men’s squad for the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia even as the Wrestling Federation of India withheld the result of the 57kg category after trials were held in Sonepat today.
Celebrated wrestler Sushil Kumar, a two-time Olympic medallist, and CWG gold medallist Bajrang Punia were exempted from the trials by the WFI because of their past performance. They will carry India’s hopes in the 74kg and 61kg respectively.
Khatri edged out Satyawrat Kadiyan in the final round of trails for a place in the 97kg category while Pawan will represent India in 86kg category.
Sumit booked his place in the 125kg category.
The result in the 57kg category has been withheld as Sandeep Tomar, the 2016 Asian Championship gold medallist, Utkarsh Kale and Ravi finished on equal points and may grapple again.
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Rahul Aware (57kg) and bonze medallist Somveer (86kg) did not take part in trails since they couldn’t control their weight, according to WFI sources.
The WFI also announced names of Greco Roman wrestlers for the Games, scheduled to be held in Jakarta and Palembang from August 18 to September 2.
Gyanendra (60kg), Manish (67 kg), Gurpreet Singh (77kg), Harpreet Singh (87 kg), Hardeep (97kg) and Naveen (125 kg) were selected by the WFI.
The trials for female wrestlers will be held tomorrow in Lucknow.
Total mess. Some are exempt from trials, sometimes result of trial is withheld, some wrestlers are training with their private IPL team, some are banned for not reaching camp, some cannot control weight !!!
Indian Men’s Football Team Cleared to Play Asian Games, Women Wait
The Indian men's football team has got the official confirmation to participate in the upcoming Asian Games in Jakarta, days after national coach Stephen Constantine appealed to the government to send a team for the mega sporting event.
"The official confirmation has come to the All India Football Federation. The men's team is going for sure but the women's team's faith still hangs in balance as they are yet to get the green light," a well-placed source close to the AIFF said.
Constantine had made an appeal to the government during the Intercontinental Cup earlier this month to let the team participate in the competition.
"We need more games and if the government is listening, send us to the Asian games. It's an U-23 event and we have 11 players in this squad who are below 23. The benefits the players will gain from the Asian Games will be huge," Constantine had said.
In his second stint with the Indian team, Constantine oversaw skipper Sunil Chhetri-inspired India's triumphant campaign in the Intercontinental Cup, which culminated with a convincing 2-0 win over Kenya in the summit showdown in Mumbai.
Constantine is set to hold a camp in July.
The Intercontinental Cup was a preparatory event for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
India are clubbed with hosts United Arab Emirates, Thailand and Bahrain in Group A of the continental showpiece, which will be held across eight centres from 5 January to 1 February.
