FIFA World Cup 2018: VAR takeaways

    HIGHLIGHTS

    1. The World Cup witnessed the introduction of the VAR, which has come with its can of controversies
    2. An argument made against VAR is that it has made on-field referees more conservative
    3. VAR is perhaps the biggest innovation in football since the Dutch introduced Total Football

The VAR is proving a constant theme of discussion in the World Cup. It has helped referees to make more correct decisions even though the spontaneity of the game might have taken a hit.

VAR IS NO GOAL-LINE TECHNOLOGY (GLT)

Unlike GLT decisions of a binary nature, goal or no goal, VAR will always have a human person interpreting the rules. So a reviewed decision may not always receive approval from all parties concerned.

    REFEREES LESS DECISIVE?

An argument made against VAR is that it has made on-field referees more conservative and they are not ready to make tough calls by themselves and instead would prefer to wait for the VAR to intervene and make it easier for them. So far, four penalties have been awarded after video referrals, showing that on-field referees are banking on the VAR to take control when it comes to game-changing decisions such as penalties.

WHEN VAR GOT IT RIGHT IN RUSSIA

PENALTY DECISIONS: The first instance of VAR being used to award a penalty was between France and Australia. France’s Antoine Griezmann was brought down in the penalty area by Rosh Ridson. Griezmann converted the penalty given after the referee overturned his initial decision in favour of Australia. Three more penalties were awarded by VAR after that in the following games.

FREE-KICK TURNED TO A PENALTY: In the match between Egypt and Russia, the referee reviewed a free-kick decision in favour of Egypt and decided to award a penalty as it became clear on referral that the foul on Mohamed Salah had happened inside the area. Salah converted the resultant spot-kick.

OFF-SIDE GOAL DISALLOWED: Saeid Ezatolahi of Iran was in an off-side position when he scored a goal against Spain but the assistant referee failed to notice it. VAR intervened and the referee disallowed the goal thus reaching the right decision.

RIGHT PLAYER BOOKED: In the match against France, Peru’s Edison Flores was booked incorrectly as the referee thought it was he who had fouled Nabil Fekir. The booking was correctly changed to Pedro Aquino after VAR informed the referee of his mistake.

DIVING EXPOSED: Brazil’s Neymar went down theatrically under a challenge from Giancarlo Gonzalez, falling backwards when the defender’s arm was on his chest, and a penalty was given at first. But the contact was minimal and the referee rightfully overturned his decision after watching the replay on screen.

WHEN VAR MIGHT HAVE GOT IT WRONG

DENIED PENALTIES: During England’s match against Tunisia, Harry Kane seemingly had two legitimate penalty claims when he was brought down in the box, but the VAR did not advise the referee to look into the challenges. Similarly, Argentina’s Cristian Pavon went down in the arc under contact from Birkir Saevarsson of Iceland. However, there was no review as the VAR interpreted there was no foul on Pavon robbing Argentina of a penalty.

RED CARD OFFENCE WENT UNPUNISHED:Croatia’s Ante Rebic stamped Argentina’s Eduardo Salvio on his shin with studs. The referee issued a yellow card but VAR could have intervened to make it a red card, a suitable punishment for an infringement of the nature, but it did not and Croatia benefitted from that decision as Rebic went on to score the opener in the 3-0 win.

I don't agree on the genocide of Albanians, genocide was also done on Serbs by the Neto army, so I don't agree, shaquri should not play victim and bring politics in WC, FIFA should punish him for his gesture.

Potential 2 match ban for Shaqiri, Xhaka. This will hurt Switzerland chances in this WC.stupidity by these players by bringing politics on Football Pitch.

Fail to understand how the symbol is political. Or was it because it was against Serbia? Would they have been banned if it was done against any other country?
For me they just showed their Albanian heritage symbolised by the Eagle. Their intention might have been something else. But how can you guess?
